How to ally with hostile AI

I know I can use envoys, so I made one and sent it over to my neighbor whom immediately started attacking it. I then saw that it has a cease fire ability. So, I click it. I then had 20 seconds, after which it got blowed up.

I know I can do what ever missions it offers, but none of the AI in my games ever seem to offer a mission where the target is anyone close by.

In this particular game, I made one unfair AI and several hard AIs. The game has progressed such that I am in lock down fighting off the unfair AI on one side and keep having to send ships to fight off the hard AI on the other. I figured last night that it would be greatly beneficial to try to use diplomacy on the hard AIs and all go battle the unfair one for awhile. I cannot pull it off though?

Maybe I should send like 20 envoys and cycle through their cease fire ability? But then I read that you only get 1.5 relationship per planet. I doubt that will be enough to get him off my back.

How do you go about increasing relationship with a hostile AI then?

Sadly you have to start out with doing missions and sending gifts before you can get a Cease Fire treaty. When you get that then you can use the Envoys effectively.

Make sure that you are having everything resarched in the diplomacy tree.

It should ne noted that there are times when you cannot force an AI to ally with you... sometimes you just cant get enough relations.

Very True.

Advent Loyalists, Vasari Loyalists, and TEC Rebels will rarely ally with anyone. Advent Rebels are more likely to ally with Vasari then TEC as well but the relationship modifier is not as high.

This is what I try to do step by step.

1. Research the diplomatic relationship techs ASAP. The mutual +3 relationship (assuming the AI gets it also) is a must.

2. Find a player you know you won't ally with (Because it's TEC Rebels and you're not TEC or its in your way) and try to blow up as much of his stuff as possible. Military relations are the foundation of most alliances. The more damage you do to a mutual enemy the happier everyone else will be.

3. Try to get a trade agreement ASAP. You should get a slow but steady increase in relations after it based on your number of trade ports. It's a great stepping stone to a cease fire.

4. If an AI is close but not quite at a level for a cease fire, sending gifts/tribute/bribes, whatever you want to call it, is a great way of speeding the process up.

5. Once a ceasefire is signed, immediately follow up with an envoy cruiser or two and you'll probably be allies for the rest of the game.

Another thing that trips people up is that you (your faction) have to like the player you want to ally with as well. If someone has just finished blowing up one of your planets, your people aren't going to like that very much, so it may prevent you from allying with AI actively attacking you. Generally its easier to get the AI to like you then you to like it, but eventually some AI kills enough enemy ships to let you get a trade agreement and then cease fire.
