I noticed that the user picture in the Windows 7-style Start menu has mysteriously disappeared. I don't know when it happened and the only major setting change was to allow the LAN to access Linux and Mac machines. Even when I change the user picture, nothing happens in the Start8 menu. See ...
Are you using a local machine account, or a Microsoft login account?
I assume rebooting didn't help.
I am local, administrator. So far rebooting didn't help, sfc /scannow, and, when I tried to find an earlier restore point, I got the System Restore error 0x80070005. The latter seems to happen in various scenarios and will tackle that problem later. I have a 64 bit version of Windows 8 that is based on an upgrade of Windows 7. Up until yesterday afternoon, I didn't notice anything wrong with the user account picture in Start8, but I installed a few different things yesterday that might have something to do with it:
I'll reply to myself with a question: How does Start8 "find" and render the User Account image that is being used in the Metro and Login screens per usual?
