Why so little skyboxes?

Seriously

I think there are only 4 different skyboxes, at least in rebellion. Why. I think it adds so much depth to the game, it's only a photo on the background, so why are there ONLY four?!

Anyone ever play eve online? Yea, dem skyboxes be beautiful. And there's one for every single solar system. Why can't we have that ):

Sins of a Solar Empire is unfortunately not about nice things, as you can say from the number of planet types, and the planet textures. Only mods add depth in these fields. Ships and ETC are nice, but many things lack variety.

Sins, like most RTS, is 32 bit with the dreaded 2 gig limit and all the assets loaded, so you need to know where to add what to keep it interesting yet playable.

Eve online has the option to reload every new map on jump, all new assets are loaded, all not used are dumped.

Actually I believe there are 6 or 7, but we get your point.

Skyboxes (that don't look compressed to hell) are pretty large in terms of texture memory use. We'd rather spend that budget elsewhere. ;)

Oh I see, so far I could only find around 4-ish. It makes me a little sad because I strictly remember that in the older Sins games there were many more unique sky boxes, and a lot of those got taken out

My favorite part about the sky boxes was when they'd reflect off the ships and gave them a whole new depth

I've looked to mods, sadly all of them choose to change strategic things in the game instead of leaving it vanilla and being a simple texture pack. If anyone could recommend one that adds custom sky boxes/planets without changing the basic game mechanics that'd be awesome

I see. I guess I'm just more of a casual audience, I pretty much always play against the AI and am more focused on the beauty of the game. Oh well, different people enjoy different things.

I like the new Skyboxes Rebellion added, they are much more spacey. Many of the old ones (and still including that ugly green one they left in their) made it seem like we were fighting entirely in a Nebula, which could get obnoxious at times.

Still, I'd say half of the old skyboxes are still in Rebellion.

What do you mean by mechanics? You're not going to find any mod that adds planets with identical stats to ones already in game, though several do a good job at making them unique but not overpowered compared to the original content. And I don't think there are any that just add skyboxes. But I'd argue the vast majority of non-SciFi movie/show mods stick pretty close to the original Sins gameplay.

I don't know what mods you saw, but I'd say take a chance and try them out. You might even like their gameplay changes.
