Noob questions

Hi folks - I picked up Trinity at the last steam sale as part of my ongoing effort to find a replacement for my beloved MoO2.  I'm only doing single player.  I'm a couple of games in and have naturally accumulated some questions.  Any help is appreciated!

- Are the pirates supposed to be the most powerful faction in the game?  Their raids are always vastly more powerful than anything that the AI can muster, and even when I'm wiping the floor with all the other factions their base has 3-4 times as many ships as I can muster.

- What does "defeat" of an AI player mean? I always receive notices that a faction has been defeated when they still have several planets and plenty of ships.  The only change seems to be that they are removed from the diplomacy screen.

- Do the special abilities of the envoy cruiser (eg, worthy cause) apply to my own planets, or only those of other players? The cruiser's description says it "improves relations" with other empires - does it do this just by existing? By being in other players' territory?

Pirates have more ships, but lack shields, which means they don't get the shield mitigation bonus (damage negation) that everyone else does. Their base will always be heavily defended.

Defeat means just that - the AI player has determined it cannot win and so rather than drag out the game, it has surrendered. All of its remaining territory and ships stay where they are, but can still be conquered by other players if they choose.

Envoy cruiser abilities only affect other empires, not your own. They just have to remain in a friendly gravity well and the bonus will auto-cast on its own, giving the player a bonus and you a relations boost.

Hope this helps. :)
