Hard to gain experience

I find it difficult to gain experience for my band of heroes, and rarely go much above lvl 10. Do the amount of experience gained from combat decrease if your are more superior?

kill stronger monsters, and take exp traits, wear items that give exp bonus, cast tutelage.

 

yes, leveling is slowed down if you kill weaker monsters.

If you have a band of heroes, that might be your problem.  The XP gain is split between heroes.  If you have a bunch of heroes in the same army, they're not going to gain much XP.
