[.85] My hero suffered perma-death?

So, the stack including my sovereign and one hero were in a fight with spiders. Only the archers and my sovereign survived. I though that the hero would be recovering in a city, but when I went looking for him, he was no where to be found. so i assumed he's permanently dead.

Is this a new feature? I don't think I saw it on the list.
