Help with Pirates?

I'm a poor strategy gamer, and in-game I tend to be weak.

 

So I went on my merry way, building a starting fleet of an Akkan and more than a dozen Cobalts. I was convinced that I was well-insured against any early-game threats. The first pirate raid was successfully destroyed. As I started to colonize other worlds, a new attack came. This time, they came with about 20 ships. I tried to muster my forces to fight them off, but as I was fighting reinforcements came and turned the attack fleet into a frightening horde. They smashed everything I had and picked off the ships I desperately tried to throw at them.

 

Surely the pirates aren't supposed to be that dangerous. Am I doing something wrong?

The pirates are the most annoying feature of the game. They are either too hard for ones like you or they are nothing but free XP for ones like me. A lot of us just shut them off TBH and that might be helpful until you get some experience yourself.

Where do you turn them off?  Under the first screen where you pick Single Player?  Options include

User interface

Video

Sound

Effects

Key Binding

Manage Files

Cinematic.

 

None mentions pirates.

No, That's the main menu options. You turn them off in the map menu before you start a game, where settings like "Locked Teams" and "Income Speeds" are.

Or you can play/create a map that doesn't have a Pirate Base on it.  Quick invasion works, too. 

Sweet, sweet sound of pirate death as they say their "arrgggggggg''s for the last time.

I don't know why I can't find it.  I have tabs for:

Locked screen

Resource speed

Research speed

Game Speed

Change Maps

and Play.

That sounds like an extremely old version of Sins (we are talking original 1.04 or something). You may need to update the game.
