Where has HUD grouping gone?

It's been a long time since I've played Sins, but one feature I remember being in place is that when you create a fleet and start filling it with multiples of the same ship type, the box for all of those ships would shrink down to the ship icon with the number of ships currently in the group. This kept the HUD very clean when maneuvering a single fleet around the map. However, now fleets seem to show each and every single individual ship always no matter what, and this is incredibly frustrating. Once a fleet becomes decently sizeable, the screen is cluttered with the tons of tiny frigates and it's hard to navigate between your capital ships. Has this function just been removed for some reason or is there now a hotkey to enable/disable HUD grouping? Also, why would it even be removed in the first place? Who micromanages every single individual frigate?

You can also change in your settings file (you'll have to open it and manually edit it with notepad) the stacking limit....currently only 10 ships can be stacked at a time (so they will appear in groups of 10 or less in the empire window) but you can raise that number to a higher value....mine is currently at 1000 so that basically with one click I can select all ships of a given type in the empire window...
