Can henchman wear platemail?

I have developed all technology. The henchman I trained is supposed to come with the best available equipment. Yet, shieldman comes with only leather. Even I level it up to be warrior, I cannot choose the chainmail and platemail trait. Does this mean henchman cannot wear platemail?

Actually I can't see the reason to use henchman instead of trained units like chosen and paladin. A trained unit can easily have aan ttack score of 70 (14x5), while a henchman equipped with the best purchasable weapon can't even have an attack score of 30.

Henchmen level up like heroes (and can get the same abilities and so as your heroes can wear chain and plate, your henchmen can wear the same type of items.

Henchmen like heroes do not die. henchmen like heroes have inventories, henchmen unlike heroes do not divide experience when having multiple ones in your armies. Thus, you can create all "hero armies".

Trained from a fortress (and choose defender), you have just trained a henchman with chain armor. Of course you have to purchase that armor or get it from another person holding such armor, but it is possible. Basically with the right fortress, producing a henchman you can create a decent starting hero to use (or replace a highly injured hero) The henchman can also grab all goodie huts and go on quests. With proper planning henchman can be worth while.

OK. Now I see for warrior traits, I have to first take endurance in order to take chainmail, and then platemail.

Correct. The other professional choices will limit the armor even more.

Defender comes with Chain Proficiency, and I think you can choose Plate Proficiency at Level 3 if you want (as long as there are no skills that are required for Plate Proficiency apart from Defender).
