newbie needs help

I recently just got sins of a solar empire through the Steam sale. For my first game I picked a small map and set the AI to easy. I colonized two planets, one asteroid, and maxed up my fleet supply (think I upgraded it twice). Then a massive pirate fleet came to my capital planet that outnumbered me at least 3 to 1 and destroyed my fleet.

Do I need to expand faster or concentrate tech on defense?

Most people disable Pirates in the game options because the pirate raids are a bit ridiculous. Otherwise sounds like you were doing well.
