Switches back to Desktop from Window 8.1

I am not sure what is causing this but when I select a application (mostly Free Games from the Windows Store) the computer switches back to the Desktop in Windows 8. When I go back to the Modern Start Screen and reselect the game about 3 times then the game will open and stick. I am using several Stardock applications (Start8, Modern Mix and the Beta of Launch8) and I suspect it is something that is incorrectly configured in one of these (I really suspect Start8 or Modern Mix) however I cannot seem to find where the problem is.

It may well be the games themselves are crashing.

If Windows 8.1 is set to boot to the desktop then when a Modern UI app closes (or crashes), it will throw you to the desktop rather than the Start Screen.
