Rain

Album: Release Some Tension

Year: 1998

Cheryl Clemons (nee Gamble) and her boyfriend share a passionate kiss in the           winsome “Rain.”

Blushing synths open the single, setting an adoring tone. Hand on her chin, she thinks of her boyfriend’s lips on hers. His hands linger on her arm, heating her skin. Her veins seem to slow the blood as it pumps through her, heigtening her sense. Her carnal instincts begin to take over. (“Sometimes it’s as soft as a misty rain/That gently touches my soul/It cools the fire that burns in me/And I simply lose control/So just.”)

In the chorus, she closes her eyes and lets herself go while she is in his arms. (“Rain down on me (On)/Let you're love just fall like raindrops/Rain on me/Just/Rain down on me (On)/Let you're love just shower me/Just rain on me.”)

She pulls him towards her, rubbing his back. All she knows is she wants him close to her as possible. She only wants him.  (“Full as a dam at capacity/My passions about to explode, yeah/I can't escape, it's surrounding me/I'm caught in a storm/That I don't need no shelter from.”)

           The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, she takes his hand and places around her waist. She tells him little movements with his fingers are best. (“Shower me/Sprinkle me/Fall down on me (Let you're love just fall on me)/Fall down, fall down on me/Let it/Fall down, fall on me.”)

An extended chorus is sung. (“Just/Rain down on me/Chill me with your loving touch/Rain on me/I wanna feel now just like raindrops/Just/Rain down on me/Me/Rain on me/Oh baby.”)

The first chorus is sung again.

Clemons says the first lyric again to close the single. (“Sometimes it’s as soft as a misty  rain.”)

SWV’s virginal vocals, inexperienced and scared, try to navigate the overwhelming urge to make out and the emotional onslaught of being in love for the first time. The desirious arrangement, tasteful and lovely, needs a fuller vocal.

The budding “Rain,” thinks it’s ready but still needs a bit more time.
