Music Review: Jason Derulo & Snoop Dogg "Wiggle"

Jason Derulo & Snoop Dogg

Wiggle

Album: Talk Dirty

Year: 2014

Jason Derulo ogles and films a curvy women at the club in the  fetishizing         “Wiggle.”

Mysterious whistling opens the single, setting a worming tone. In the intro, Snoop Dogg nudges a dazed Derulo and tells him to think of a good pick-up line. He tells Snoop he thought of something that will get her attention. He approaches her and asks how her butt doesn’t manage to snap the jeans she’s wearing. Of course, she must know how to dance. (“Hey yo Jason/Say somethin' to her/Holla at her/I got one question/How do you fit all that in them jeans?/You know what to do with that big fat butt.”)

In the chorus, a shrill flute whistles as Derulo asks her to shake her butt. (“Wiggle wiggle wiggle/Wiggle wiggle wiggle/Wiggle wiggle wiggle/Just a little bit.”)

He does an adult version of “Patty Cake.” He admires her butt as she stands with her friends and dances. He takes photos of her butt, not caring if she’s aware of it. He thinks of the caption he would put on his Instagram once he posts it. In a couple minutes, people will be speculating about the mystery girl. He begins to rethink his no-commitment rule for relationships.  (“Patty cake patty cake with no hands/Got me in this club, making wedding plans/If I take pictures while you do your dance/I could make you famous on Instagram.”)

In the pre-chorus, he high-fives his friends and calls out a compliment to her. He tells his friends he’s getting so turned on. (“Hot damn it, your booty like two planets/Go ahead, and go ham sandwich/Woah I can't stand it/Cause you know what to do with that big fat butt.”)

         The chorus is sung again.

She laughs and wipes the sweat off her face with a paper towel. He puts his arm around her shoulders and tells that she won’t ever to have to worry about working at her office job again. He’ll turn her into a star if she became his girlfriend. (“Cadillac Cadillac, pop that trunk/Let's take a shot, alley oop that dunk/Tired of working that nine to five/Oh, baby let me come and change your life.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, Snoop says he wants to sleep with her. He says they can try new positions and explore what she likes sexually. He says he can get any girl he wants. (“Wiggle wiggle wiggle/Shake it shake it girl/Little bit, little bit, little bit/Shake what your mamma gave you, misbehave you/I just wanna strip you, dip you, flip you, bubble bathe you/What they do/Taste my raindrops, k boo?/Now what you're willing, what you wanting, what you may do/Completely separated til I deeply penetrate it/Then I take it out and wipe it off/Eat it, ate it , love it, hate it/Overstated, underrated, everywhere I being king/You wiggle wiggle for the D-O-double G again.”)

Derulo stops her mid-sentence with his hand and motions with his hands that she show her backside to him. He claps and thanks her. He asks her again where she finds her jeans. (“Come on baby, turn around/You're a star, girl, take a bow/It's just one thing that's killing me/How do you fit that in them jeans?”)

        The chorus is sung again.

At the end, Snoop Dogg leers, telling she’ll be starring in some films one day, leaving out that they will be found behind red curtains. (“Now make it clap (wiggle wiggle wiggle)/ Now make it clap (wiggle wiggle wiggle)/ Now make it clap (wiggle wiggle wiggle)/ Now make it clap (wiggle wiggle wiggle)/Damn baby, you got a bright future behind you.”)

Derulo’s serpertine vocals focus only on her body.  He’s appealing to the lowest common demonimator to become a major pop star. He’s also validating every single “fuck me” and other inapproriate sexual remarks made on Twitter.

Snoop Dogg’s uneasy rap tries convince her to talk Derulo, buttering her up compliments and skewed stories of the famous life. He’s enacting those blind item where the shady star picks up a woman (or several) and then does something that has be covered up.

The tonal “Wiggle” glamorizes the seedy side of celebrity life, deluding itself that it’s being humorous and not at all objectifying.
