Me and My Broken Heart

Album: Me and My Broken Heart EP

Year: 2014

Jake Roche settles for the relationship he has in the knockoff “Me and My Broken Heart.”

A whimpering piano, sampling Rob Thomas’ single, “Lonely No More” opens the single, setting a duplicated tone.  The chorus starts the single. She kept flirting with him and he thought she was kind of cute. She asked him out and they began to see each other regularly. She’s someone to eat dinner with after work and have some conversation. Later, she’ll join him in his bed and they will sleep together. He hopes the fleeting gratification breaks through his numbness. He hasn’t truly ever felt anything since his last long-term relationship ended years ago. She strokes his chest and he feels better for awhile. (“All I need's a little love in my life/All I need's a little love in the dark/A little but I'm hoping it might kick start/Me and my broken heart/I need a little loving tonight/Hold me so I'm not falling apart/A little but I'm hoping it might kick start/Me and my broken heart.”)

Every so often, she will remark to him “of course” if he criticizes her. When she gets really ticked off at him, she’ll tell him that he’s bitter and given up. Yet, they will tell each other “I love you.” She realizes he doesn’t really love her, he stays with her because there’s nothing else. It’s not his idea of love. (“Shotgun, aimed at my heart, you got one/Tear me apart and then some/How do we call this love?/I try to run away but your eyes/Tell me to stay oh why/Why do we call this love?”)

In the pre-chorus, he says they can’t be this way for much longer. He can’t bear the thought of being by himself. (“It seems like we've been losing control/Somebody tell me I'm not alone/When I say.”)

              The  chorus is sung again.

He figures she resents him and tries to get back him in passive aggressive ways. Their words mean nothing to each other. They are playing into the image of the happy couple. (“Maybe some part of you just hates me/You pick me up and play me/How do we call this love?/One time tell me you need me tonight/To make it easy, you lie/And say it's all for love?”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, an edited version of the chorus is sung. (“Me and my broken/Me and my broken/How do we call this?/It's just me/It's just me/It's just me/Me and my broken heart.”)

The chorus is sung again to end the single.

Roche’s withdrawn vocals slog through the relationship, knowing it isn’t going to get any better. It’s his distraction from his pain and losing her will only cause him to face it, which he can’t do.

The Rob Thomas sample, “Lonely No More” is used in the chorus. However, it’s just like Thomas did for his own single. There are also some dabs of Maroon 5 thrown in, for good measure sprinkled in Roche’s vocals.

The inept “Me and My Broken Heart” can’t find an idea of its own, landing straight-to-video.
