list of civilizations - what do we know so far?

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere. I only visit here infrequently and couldn't find any recent posts about it.

So far, we seem to have:

Terrans (maybe two variants, loyalists and pirates), Altarians, Drengi, Krynn, Iridium, Thalan, and Yor.

That's potentially eight civilzations, which is ok but not up to snuff with GalCiv2. Furthermore they killed off some of my favorite races, so I hope there will be a few more exotic new alien races.

Does anyone have information to add to this? Has there been any annoucement about when we can expect a full list? It feels late enough in the development process that this type of information should be available, even if it's just a teaser.

There's just the 8 in the base game.  Which I think is a little light.  Especially given some of the larger galaxy sizes.

Ok, thanks Charon. I guess I can look forward to the inevitable expansion then. If there are only eight to choose from, I hope the developers will at least take extra care to make them all very distinctive.

Yes there are only 8 races that the developers will release on the base game but they will also create a way to build your own races. That and expansions will undoubtly fill in more. And hopefully make more options to create new races.

I really don't want to be responsible for creating game content though.  ToA should be considered the definitive version of GCII now, so should have been a starting point for GCIII.  I'd like to see 12 races at a minimum.

In one of the videos they talked about combining traits from those 8 and those created by MODers.

Don't forget that most likely there will be people who put their civs on the steam workshop. And then a few weeks/months later you should start seeing "civ packs" that ad maybe dozens or more at once. Few years down the line i imagine there will be packs of fully custom civs with their own portraits and flavor chat options etc.

so that way you can have more civs without doing the work.
