Stuck Like Glue
Album: The Incredible Machine
Year: 2010
Jennifer Nettles enjoys her dramatic relationship with her boyfriend in the mortifying “Stuck Like Glue.”
A pert guitar opens the single, setting a giggly tone. She gets a phone call, letting her know her boyfriend is here. She races downstairs and her boyfriend has decided to take her to lunch. He knew she forgot it on the way out and didn’t have any money spend. They’ve been together six years. People thought they would be done in less than a year. Some days she wonders they’ve remained a stable couple. They have had fights they have led them to leave their apartment for days at a time. Her heart sinks at the thought. (“Mmm better, Mmm better/Absolutely no one that knows me better/No one that can make me feel sooo good/How did we stay so long together?/When everybody, everybody said we never would/And just when I, I start to think they're right/That love has died.”)
In the chorus, he will look at her a certain way and she can’t stop smiling. Then, she resolves to stay a little longer. She cares about him and can’t leave him despite it crossing her mind every so often. (“There you go making my heart beat again/Heart beat again/Heart beat again/There you go making me feel like a kid/Won't you do it and do it one time?/There you go pulling me right back in/Right back in/Right back in/And I know I'm never letting this go/I'm stuck on you/Stuck like glue/You and me baby we're stuck like glue/Stuck like glue/You and me baby we're stuck like glue.”)
Sometimes he frustrates her. He goes off and does his own thing without consulting her. She wants to end it and move on. She’ll call him out for it, he’ll yell back at her. Then, the doors will slam. However, he’ll come back to her a few hours later and rub her shoulders. He’ll apologize and make a joke. (“Some days I don't feel like trying/Some days you know I wanna just give up/When it doesn't matter who's right, fight about it all night/Had enough/You give me that look "I'm sorry baby let's make up"/You do that thing that makes me laugh/And just like that.”)
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she starts getting random. (“You almost stay out, too stuck together from the ATL/Feeling kinda sick?/Just a spoon full of sugar make it better real quick/I say/What you going to do with that?/Come on over here with that/Sugar sticky sweet stuff/Come on give me that stuff/Everybody wants some/Melodies that get stuck/Up in your head/Up in your head/Up in your head/Up in your head/Stuck like glue/You and me together, say, it's all I wanna do/I said.”)
The chorus is sung twice to end the single.
Nettles’ capable vocals stretch way back to the theater. Except the seats are empty and there is no show. By the bridge, she breaks in some try-hard hybrid of reggae/rap. She’s ends being some overgrown drama kid showing off just because she can.
The cutesy “Stuck Like Glue” writes her boyfriend’s name over and over in her notebook while staring at reports.
