Music Review: Iggy Azalea & MO "Beg For It"

Iggy Azalea & MO

Beg For It

Album: Reclassified

Year: 2014

Guys have to work for Iggy Azalea’s attention in the  palatable  “Beg For It.”

A clacking  beat opens the single, setting a decisive tone.  In the intro, MO gets a thrill from watching the guy practically wait on her hand and foot just to talk her. (“I'ma make you beg, I'ma make you beg for it/I'ma make you beg, I'ma make you beg.”)

Azalea shows up at the club in her Masarati. Her stylist helped her pick out her outfit. She found her a Givenchy piece that flatters her butt and reveals some cleavage. She’s the expensive type and self-made. However, she’s still worth getting to know. She’s the new It Girl., making appearances on all the talk and late night shows. She has an apartment in Manhattan, right on Madison Avenue. She likes her curvy body type and new jetset lifestyle. (“Pulled up looking picture perfect, baby/High price, but I'm worth it, baby/Can't play with ya, I've been busy workin', baby/Gettin' faded in the European, swervin', ayy/Look, describe Iggy, groundbreaking what the word is/Hit the stage, ass shaking like I'm nervous/When in New York, I be parking right on Madison/This ain't no accident, I'm killing them on purpose/I-G-G-Y, think she just had to do it better/Ride with me, fly livin', there ain't nothin' to it/And my waist slim, ass fat, you gotta have it/Get my bake on, cake long/That's automatic.”)

In the chorus, MO notices the guys looking at her. She talks about it with her friends, debating which one deserves her the most. The guy has to prove himself to her first before anything will happen between them. (“I know you like the way I turn it on/I'm out here with my friends/I'm a make you beg, I'mma make you beg for it/If you don't do this right, you're going home alone/I guess you'll have to beg/I'ma make you beg, I'ma make you beg for it.”)

She says she’s good in bed. She has to have a guy who will be her equal. If he stammers around her, he’s out of the running. She eyes the guys’ clothes and dismisses those department store dressed up. They should consider themselves grateful she thought they were attractive. All the guys want her now. Even the married ones. Not a day goes that by that a guy says he would like to marry her. (“P***** power, pay me by the hour/I need me a Braveheart, can't deal with a coward/I tell him if he ain't ballin', he should hit the showers/If I peek you, you lucky, baby, this money ours/All yellow gold on me, like I'm Trinidad (James)/Sittin' drop top wonder where the ceiling's at/I know my old thang wanna bring the feeling back/But I got a new thang, baby, I ain't feeling that now/Iggy Iggy Iggy, can't you see?/That everybody wanna put their hands on me/See I be on this money, why your man on me?/And I need another hand with all these bands on me.”)

          MO sings the hook again.

In the bridge, Azalea gives the guy who think he’s already hers a dirty look and walks away. Who is that guy kidding? (“Get up out my face like who d'you think you are/Talking all this trash like blah-de-blah-de-blah (Oh eh oh) nuh-uh (oh eh oh) nuh-uh (oh eh oh)/Get up out my face like who d'you think you are/Made me wanna laugh like har-de-har-de-har (Oh eh oh) nuh-uh (oh eh oh) nuh-uh.”)

           MO sings the chorus again.

In the final section, MO says guys can’t get enough of her. A guy has to stand out for her..(“Look boy, I'm like a drug/If you want my love better smoke it up (Make you beg for it, I'ma make you beg for it)/You can look, boy, but don't you touch/If you want my love make me give a fuck (Make you beg for it, I'mma make you beg for it.”)

Azalea keeps her rap conversational. She lists off her accomplishments as though it’s her resume. She is being truthful, given that she is the new It Girl in music right now. She is trying not to oversell herself though (which was the mistake in “Fancy”) The accent, thankfully, is still toned down. Intially with Azalea, the fakeness of the accent was far too obvious (and a pet peeve for me). It was distracting.

MO’s ethereal vocals meld with the beats, as she stays on her euphoric high. She’s tipsy and giggly but she’s enjoying her time in the spotlight.

The good “Beg For It” gets itself going in the right direction.
