Music Review: Sweet Sensation "Hooked On You"

Sweet Sensation

Hooked On You

Album: Take It While It’s Hot

Year: 1987/1989 (Remix)

Betty LeBron has butterflies whenever she thinks of her crush in the              delightful “Hooked On You.”

Persuasive drums and synths open the single, setting a flirtiaous tone. She wonders if her crush will show up. She keeps an eye on the door while she talks to her friend. She sees him walk in and has to cover part of her mouth with her plastic cup. She’s certain she’s blushing. Usually, she doesn’t get giggly around guys. With him, though, she does. She glances at him quickly, breaks eye contact and glances at him again (“I can't explain what I'm going through/Wish I could find the right words to say/Losing control and it's over you/Nobody else could make me feel this way.”)

In the pre-chorus, she wants him to know she really likes him. Her friend mentioned his name and she perked up, wondering what she will learn about him. (“Could it just be that I'm curious/And I want to make you play my game/But something tells me that it's serious/Because I go insane when I hear your name.”)

In the chorus, she says he’s the one she thinks about all the time and has to have. (“I'm hooked on you.I'm hooked on you, what can I do/It’s over you.”)

He walks over to say hello. She tells him hello, her cup shaking in her hand. He puts his arm around her shoulders. She wants to kiss him and lead him to the bedroom. (“I try to hide it but I know it's true/My body trembles when I look in your eyes/I'm so turned on, I don't know what to do/It seems a touch can make my tempature rise.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, she raps that she sees him often during the day. He lives in her neighborhood. She sees him on the basketball court and cheers him on. She really wants to go out with him. (“Days go warm, and nights go cold/You are the one I need to hold/Try decide, this love is made/Loving you can set me free/I'm hooked on you can't you see/Hearts on fire/Higher, higher/Nobody else can make me feel the way that you do.”)

The chorus is sung again to end the single.

Sweet Sensations’ plush vocals have a seasoned flavor that today’s current groups lack. LeBron may have been lead but they work as a team.

The  terrific “Hooked On You” is proof that 80s freestyle needs a comeback.

*This a review of the original  version.  The 1989 loses the rap part of the bridge and uses more synths. However, it’s equally as good.
