Eden
wants to be a normal partygoer at the club in the feathery “Too Cool To Dance.”
A swaggering guitar opens the single, setting an alienated tone. She dresses well. She changes her wardrobe with the seasons. Summer 2014 clothes have already been put in a bag for the Goodwill. She has a natural charisma that draws people to her. She enters the back door the club and looks around for her physical type: a fashionable bad boy with some creative ink. (“You know I'm always looking fly/Never wear the same outfit twice/I don't even have to try/Bitches better recognize/Won't catch me waiting in a queue/In and out, merci beaucoup/I like boys with attitude/Skinny jeans and good tattoos.”)
In the pre-chorus, the guitars chug, drowning out Eden
. people are whispering whenever she sits down or glances in another direction. The scrutiny is tiring. People are intimidated and no one talks to her. She prefers to go to downstairs. People in the crowd don’t care. They are too busy having fun themselves. (“It's boring in the VIP, everybody watching me/When the DJ plays it loud, make my way down to the crowd.”)
In the chorus, she flaps her arms around. She twirls. She and her friends slow dance. People upstairs get too uptight and think they are above having fun. However, she enjoys it. (“When the bass kicks in we're not too cool to dance/We're not too cool to dance/We're not too cool to dance/We're not too cool to dance/We don't care if no one understands/No one understands/We're not too cool to dance.”)
In the last six weeks, she took a vacation to Monaco and lived on the beach. Next, she attended a fashion show and finally got a chance to cut her hair. Champagne was constantly in her hand as she chatted up the men and even got some to go home with her. (“Got this tan in Monaco/Got these bangs in Tokyo/Went there for a fashion show/Yogi sat me in front row/Champagne kisses bubbly/If you take me home you can cuddle me/Platinum lightening in my eyes/Got my mind on my money and my money on my mind.”)
The pre-chorus is sung again.
An extended chorus is sung. (“When the bass kicks in we're not too cool to dance…Too cool to dance/Too cool to dance.”)
The pre-chorus is sung again.
A second extended chorus is sung to end the single. (“When the bass kicks in…Come on baby, now/Let me show you how/We’re not cool to dance.”)
Eden
’s airheaded vocals are down to earth, rejecting the elitest attitudes of the other socialites. However, she lacks intellectual curiousity, revealing the shallowness of her lifestyle.
The young “Too Cool To Dance” struggles to find its identity.
