Album: Sadnecessary
Year: 2013
Clemens Rebhein struggles with drug addiction in the harrowing “Stolen Dance.”
A searching guitar opens the single, setting a lost tone. He opens another dresser. He thought had another stash hidden somewhere. It’s helped him through so much. Then, he remembers that his brother flushed it down the toliet. He wishes he could have tackled his brother and snatched it out of his hands. He misses it. (“I want you by my side/So that I never feel alone again/They’ve always been so kind/But now they’ve brought you away from here/I hope they didn't get your mind/Your heart is too strong anyway/We need to fetch back the time/They have stolen from us.”)
In the chorus, if he has another dose, it will be life-changing. However, he has to disguise from his family and friends. No one can know. (“And I want you/We can bring it on the floor/You’ve never danced like this before/But we don’t talk about it/Dancin’ on doin the boogie all night long/Stoned in paradise/Shouldn’t talk about it/Shouldn't talk about it.”)
His hand won’t stop shaking. He punches his bed in frustation and cries out. He wonders when he’ll be able get his next hit without getting watched. (“Coldest winter for me/No sun is shining anymore/The only thing I feel is pain/Caused by absence of you/Suspense is controlling my mind/I cannot find the way out of here/I want you by my side/So that I never feel alone again.”)
The chorus is sung again to end the single.
Rebhein’s haunted vocals wander, his eyes dead. He is empty, unable to cope. He can’t remember the last time he ventured out of town or even worked.
The affecting “Stolen Dance” is tough to hear but incredibly real.
