Music Review: Pitbull & Ne-Yo "Time If Our Lives"
Pitbull & Ne-Yo
Time of Our Lives
Album: Globalization
Year: 2014
Pitbull makes the most of what he has in the disjointed “Time of Our Lives.”
Easygoing synths open the single, setting a mellow tone. The pre-chorus starts the single. Ne-Yo finally mailed out his rent check. Even after getting some overtime, he still barely broke even. He put some aside from groceries and gas. But there’s $20 leftover. He plans on splurging and going out to the bar. (“I know my rent was gon' be late bout a week ago/I worked my ass off, but I still can't pay it though/But I just got just enough/To get off in this club/Have me a good time, before my time is up/Hey, let's get it now.”)
In the chorus, Ne-Yo doesn’t many chances to go out like he used to. He wants to enjoy his life as much as he can. (“Oh, I want the time of my life/Oh baby oh give me the time of my life/Let's get it now.”)
Pitbull states his nickname and namechecks Ne-Yo. Pitbull heads right to the bar spends all his money on shots. He wants to get drunk and hit on some pretty women. He thinks he sees a woman as beautiful as Mariah Carey. He taps her shoulder and asks her to grind against him. She obliges him and he buys her a drink. He finds out she dumped her for cheating on her.He tells her he can heal her pain. (“Mr. Worldwide/Ne-Yo/This is the last $20 I got/But I'ma have a good time ballin' or out/Tell the barteneder line up some shots/Cause I'ma get loose tonight/She's on fire, she's so hot/I'm no liar, she burn up the spot/Look like Mariah, I took another shot/Told her drop, drop, drop, drop it like it's hot/Dirty talk, dirty dance/She a freaky girl and I'm a freaky man/She on the rebound, broke up with her ex/And I'm like Rodman, ready on deck/I told her I wanna ride out, and she said yes/We didn't go to church, but I got blessed.”)
Ne-Yo sings the pre-chorus and chorus again.
Another pay week. Another bar. Another woman. Same old thing. (“Tonight I'ma lose my mind/Better get yours cause I'm gonna get mine/Party every night, like my last/Mommy know the drill, shake that ass/Go ahead baby let me see what you got/You know you got the biggest booty in this spot/And I just wanna see that thing drop/From the back to the front to the top/You know me I'm off in the cut/Always like a squirrel, looking for a nut/This isn't for show I'm not talking 'bout luck/I'm not talking 'bout love, I'm talking 'bout lust/Now let's get loose, have some fun/Forget about bills and the first of the month/It's my night, your night, our night, let's turn it up.”)
Ne-Yo sings the pre-chorus and chorus again.
In the bridge, Ne-Yo says people have their things they like to do. He likes to party and forget about being responsible for a couple hours. (“Everybody gon' do something (Everybody gon' do something)/I said, everybody gon' do something (Everybody gon' do something)/So you might as well you roll it up/Pour it up, drink it up, throw it up tonight/I said, everybody gon' do something (Eveybody gon' do something)/Said, everybody gon' do something (Everybody gon' do something)/So you might as well you roll it up/Pour it up, drink it up, throw it up tonight.”)
Pitbull dedicates the single to people who are getting by. He says he can relate. But the most important thing is living. (“This for anybody going through tough times/Believe me, been there, done that/But everyday above ground is a great day, remember that.”)
Ne-Yo sings the pre-chorus and chorus to end the single.
Pitbull is out of breath and out of his depth. He huffs and puffs as he tries to keep with the young’uns. However, with each effort it’s becoming apparent that his brand is becoming depreciated.
The single seemed to be tailored to fit Ne-Yo’s strengths. Whereas Pitbull is stone cold serious, Ne-Yo glides along, enjoying the breeze. Much like Shakira, he is doing the real work selling it.
The threadbare “Time of Our Lives” Pitbull seems to be tagging along to Ne-Yo
