Come Over

Album: New Eyes

Year: 2014

Grace Chatto assures her friend that things will get better in the  palatable       “Come Over.”

Off-kilter synths open the single, setting an uneasy tone. She tells her friend he’s dealing with the hard part now – trying to make a decision and figure out the next move. The answer will be clear once his mind is. Soon, he’ll know. (“I never said any of this was gonna be simple/But sometimes all it takes is just a symbol/Because the place you want to reach is right in front of you/You're getting stronger, so just keep on that but longer/Ra pa pum.”)

In the chorus, Stylo G says he wants to be with Chatto. She’s been helping him out so much. He’s made mistakes and done things he’s not proud of. However, but that all stops with her. (“Girl come over, mi want you closer, tired of the rainy days/You bring me sun sun sun sunshine/You bring me sun sun sun sunshine/So before the night over I want you to know that I'm willing to change my ways/You bring me sun sun sun sunshine/You bring me sun sun sun sunshine/Come over, come over, come over, come come over/Come over, come over, come over, come come over.”)

She mentions he’ll get into trouble and won’t be able to fix anything. He has to apologize to the friends and family he hurt. Eventually, life will make the choice for him. (“I guess you're gonna run out of luck love sooner or later/You better make time to sit down and out pen to paper/Because the things you want to do will slip away from you/It won't be long now, so just keep on being strong now/Ra pa pum.”)

Stylo G sings the chorus again.

In the bridge, he loves her and will do what he can for her to like him. She’s his entire world. He says he’s said all he’s needed to say. She has to forgive him already. He contacted her best friend on Facebook, asking her friend to say to hi to her. But no response. He would like to call her but his phone is shut off. He doesn’t understand how she could just move on. (“A regular she blow my mind/Nah tell no lie mi can't live without you, without you/Girl you got me weak in my knees/Seven days of the week mi can't stop think about you, about you/Come over, come over, come over, come come over

(Sun sun sun sunshine, sun sun sun sunshine)/Come over, come over, come over, come come over (Sun sun sun sunshine, sun sun sun sunshine/Look how much time mi tell you say mi sorry girl/About time now fi you spend the night over/80 days past and mi nu see you girl/Baby make we move on cause the fight over/Regular she cuss me/Tell her friend dem bout she nu trust me/Well if a so it have to be so let it be/Since the last three months mi know you a fi me/Mi want pick up mi phone but mi can't call you/Hold heap of questions mi a go ask you/Baby mi love you why you a go on so?/Now you show off a bag man want you/(Ra pa pum)/ Mi want pick up mi phone but mi can't call you/Hold heap of questions mi a go ask you/Baby mi love you why you a go on so?/Now you show off a bag man want you/(Ra pa pum.”)

             Stylo sings the chorus again.

Some of the chorus, which was in the bridge, ends the single. (“Come over, come over, come over, come come over (Sun sun sun sunshine, sun sun sun sunshine)/Come over, come over, come over, come come over (Sun sun sun sunshine, sun sun sun sunshine.”)

Chatto’s fragile vocals are like glass: at any moment, she could break. There is a warmth to her that she’ll be okay.  The vocoder, though, blurs the words and takes away from her.

Stylo G fits in well, despite being overused. By the bridge, he takes over at Chatto’s expense. While it’s great that the band letting others shine, they need to remember themselves, too.

Clean Bandit’s creative arrangement flows. There’s a physicality in it that doesn’t seem to exist with other electronic music. The synth usually leads to an unexpected direction.

The so-so  “Come Over” is a nice try but they can do better.
