Can't improve planet tiles on some systems

I noticed this in b2 as well. I have a couple planets that I cannot improve via terraforming construction. Every time (for these two planets) I choose to build one of the terraforming-like improvements (Soil Engineering, Planetary Soil Upgrade, Terraforming), the yellow site selection shifts to the colony hub and won't let me build. I have a save queued to one of the planets (idle planet), but the save file is massive (playing an insane sized galaxy). Any way to upload this?

Oh, and yes, this is in beta 3.

i had a similar problem in an early beta the issue was that i had 32 jobs i think in the planet que as soon as a couple were finished it allowed me to continue building could this be the same isssue

One way to upload huge files to Stardock is to move them into a facility similar to "Dropbox" and copy its like address into a ticket.

I have also seen this issue.

I have had this issue only on VERY large (maybe 20+) planet sizes.  (usually when 'tweaking' a home world or so for cheats fun :-)

And,  I have noticed at times,  it clearly seems to be related to number of usable tiles,  since I have had some that say, the first 2 teraforms wont work, but then the laters ones WILL allow some tiles to be recovered, and (larger) planets, that nothing can be recovered.

There is an upper limit on the number of planetary hexes the game currently allows players to improve.  I haven't done the math, but I run into this on a few planets every game.

Follow-up. To the queue, I didn't have a queue on this planet, so it's unfortunately not related to that.

I did find, however, that the fourth tier improvement (sorry, name escapes me) was allowed, but the earlier ones weren't. Related to Hamilmac's note perhaps?

I believe this is related to the planet type. Certain planets are not able to be terraformed by lower terraforming techs. Either too small or too hostile.

If you have a special resource on that planet and you sold it to another race,  you will now have an empty tile that  you cannot place anything on.

Terraforming buildings have a tag called <LandPercentageMin>

Biospheres have 0% (non-unique, but XML is bugged to make it unique OR unique with wrong text)
Biosphere Manipulators have 35% (non-unique, but XML is bugged to make it unique OR unique with wrong text)
Planetary Soil Upgrade has 30%
Soil Engineering has 30%
Terraforming Plant has 25%
Habitat Improvement has 20%
Resequencing Station has 15%
Ultra-Terraformers have 30% (non-unique)

Did not know that. Ty, will have to try it

I found a planet of very high class (21) that I can't build any terraforming improvements on.

It's not special in the sense that it is not hostile in any way...just a normal planet with a high planet class.

To go through the options mentioned previously in this thread:

  • Planet is not hostile
  • Planet does not have any special resources that I have sold off
  • There is no construction queue on the planet

Could we plase have some kind of Stardock confirmation that this behaviour is working as intended or is it a bug?

Asmodean_dk,

The ability to build terraforming improvements has to do with the amount of available land, which every planet has.  Sometimes high class planets don't have many tiles to clear because the land isn't there.

How to tell if it has available land?

Simply look at the map, on a normal map the land is obvious (usually a shade of brown/grey/green) where water is usually blue.  So if all the land is already covered with tiles none of the lower end terraforming would be available as it needs high land content in order to terraform.  The higher end terraforming also still requires some land available to, don't know the math but somewhere around 30-40% for the best terraforming tile.

The last terraforming tile in most races allows any tile to be terraformed (with the exception of the Altarian Tech Tree) therefore 1 tile on the map even if completely in water can be terraformed.

Extreme worlds it's a little more tricky when it comes to seeing available land especially Toxic Worlds as both the land and water appear green but it uses the same formula.

Hey Seilore,

Thanks for the clarification - good info.

Bad implementation by Stardock then. I see no reason why unavailable terraforming projects should appear in the planet's build list. It only serves to confuse the user (in this case me).
