If you are connected to Steam at all, you are up to date. Unless it is released as an opt-in. The latest have not been opt-in patches. If you were not up to date, Steam would be nagging you about it. I don't know of a way to check directly, but I have not seen Steam fail to notice a game not updated and fix it immediately. It's the insistent nature of Steam.
