Co-Op discussion and other Pre-Beta comments
I attempted to play a 2v2 game on Seton (which is a map that I thought I would enjoy with 2v2) and was disappointed to find that there were several aspects of this build that aren't conducive to this type of game. The first noticeable problem was the fact that even though there were two teams the map had put three of us on the same side of the map and one all by itself on the other side (my ally and I were together with an enemy on one side of the map while the other enemy could essentially roam free with no worries of attack).
Further along I also noticed that I was unable to take command posts because my ally was also trying to take them. I don't know what the best way to go about this is for Co-Op games since it seems that both sides would still need the power generation (so maybe sharing in some way? The ally gets 30% of the other's power?), but I don't want all of our forces just sitting there for 30 minutes waiting for the point to be captured and not understanding why their ally is preventing that from happening. Maybe just the first come first serve dynamic like in Sins.
Despite all of this the gameplay has made huge strides. I felt like there were plenty of resources on the map to build the quantity of units that I wanted (since the only thing I ran out of was radioactives because the map wouldn't allow me to build them in the proper place this may be too liberal, but for the moment it lets me focus on other aspects of the game).
The unit movement still needs some improvement and having all of my tier 1 units fly in front of my tier 3 units to get to the battle isn't what I want them to do (I've tried to group them, but I haven't had much success). I expect unit movement to be as much a debate as it has always been, but on these huge maps I just gave up on trying to get any of my tier 3 units closer to the opposing side and just built advanced factories closer to the enemy, which was actually faster than movement despite the build times. Having some increase of speed across owned territories could help this a lot. The smart systems need to be more powerful and I would contest that the seeds do as well. Because the AI doesn't build any air units I was able to fly over their seed with 15 bomber squadrons and destroy the seed in a matter of two minutes.
Also, once all enemy seeds are destroyed we should win the game right? I destroyed both and had to wait for my victory points to reach 500 before victory was actually achieved.
I think the new build is a huge improvement and am excited to see what comes in 0.5 so keep up the good work.
