Pre-capital strategy/counter to massed missile defences?

I'm having trouble taking on the AI when they mass their missile defences on the control points. It ends up a rush to get as many as I can before they lock them down. At that point, I end up on the defensive (since I can't break through) until I get the capital ships, at which point I've got enough of a force to effectively attack.

Not sure if this is intentional, but it means that I'll often have a really stale stage where I can't attack anywhere, since everything is guarded by tons of defences + an enemy battlegroup or two. A bit of thumb twiddling.

This is against the Normal AI. What's your strategy/counter to this?

Make more t2 artillery.  They crush buildings, and are incredibly (perhaps to much so right now) effective against units.  You really can't go wrong.  Be sure to have plenty of t1 spam to soak up damage when you attack positions.

Would you also consider using T2 bombers? They seem to distract the missile defences while also dealing hella damage.

I don't think that's a good idea.

To start, a smart system costs 100 metal.  A bomber costs 300 metal, 60 reactives, and 4 logistical slots.  This doesn't include investing in a sky factory, 2 research matrices, and then the time to research the bomber.  From my experience, smarty systems shot down airplanes very quickly.  So I would recommend never flying over smarties because you are always biting the economical bullet when you do (meaning your opponent is winning because you lost resources inefficiently).  Even as a distraction, it is very metal inefficient to use bombers against smarties.

I'll take the 90 metal and 10 (I think reactives?) artillery unit!

Also, in my opinoin, the bombers function rather wonky right now.  I feel that sometimes they fly over and don't drop, or that they drop, but they don't damage everything they hit.  Meaning, when you look at all the items that the splash of the bombs hit, I have seen them damage certain units or buildings, but ignore others.

So overall, I think you are much better investing in more t2 artillery!  And more t1 spam!  Given the current state of the AI, I would prioritize the t2 artillery over the t2 heavy tank.  The t2 artillery does so much more damage in the long run that it is a must have.  I usually have made several t2 artillery pieces before I even bother to make my 1st zeus

Hope this helped :)!

Of course I should've looked at the numbers! Great points, and I agree - the bombers often perform a bombing run without the bombs.

What do you think of the three capitals? The artillery ship doesn't seem too much more powerful than the T2 artillery.

I haven't used them extensively because I feel you can get more done by investing in the lower tier units. The t3 ships are just to slow.

The offensive ship is the one I'll use if I do make them. I guess they add some good damage and act as a large damage sponge.

The artillery capital ship has a missle barrage that fires every so often that abolsuelty demolishes everything. But it is to slow. And I beleve it has same range as t2 artillery. So I just make t2 artillery. You can build like 4 t2 artillery units for the cost.

The last t3 ship is counter t3 ship I think. I have nothing good or bad to say about it. I usually have no problems killing t3 ships with outright spam so I never build this.
