I can not say I have ever heard of this. I very much doubt if it is even possible. What you need is two seperate internet connections with a server on each end. Cat5 cabling typically runs no more than 500 feet and wireless won't get you that far reliably. Good luck....

Now you understand my problem Kith. I know for sure it's possible, I just don't have the tens of thousands of dollars to buy all the equipment...besides who wants a bunch of Cisco routers in their room? I think I can set up something through a VPN, I just don't know how...

when you say you want to share a broadband connection, do you mean you want to have internet access on the second computer by onnecting to the first but no connection to an ISP from the second? or do you just want to connect the two computers for file sharing, etc?

You can have a VPN, and the servers can be only software. But you will need a seperate connections to the internet at both locations.

Vizo, I need to share the connection...I need to have access to the Internet. I also need it to be speedy, I will be doing a lot of uploading/downloading from location #2. If you ask why not just get a second connection, it's because location #2 doesn't allow me to have one. It's on a college campus and their connection is slower than dial-up. I need an alternative....so I wanted to share the dedicated T-1 line we have at my job.

if not, you'd best pay a contractor to do it for you from the start, or you wil pay twice most likely..

ok, can't help you boost a college funded communication line, FAA frowns on it, unless it is done with express permission in writing...

but all the information is online, you just need to do site surveys for Spread Spectrum Analysis so you know if your freq is going to end up drowned out or not..

If you have no internet connection at the 2nd location, here is an alternative that is marginally faster than dialup.
run a server at #1 with remote access enabled. run some type of internet connection software such as Sygate on #1. dial up #1 with #2 and connect to internet through #1. I've done this before and, as I say, it is a little faster than normal dialup depending on the connection you get. since the phone connection is direct it is pretty stable.

That's about all I can think of offhand unless you want to get into big bucks with microwave or shortwave.

IP can you even do LOS at 15-20 miles? I think the curvature of the earth would interfere.

In any case, it would cost thousands in equipment alone....

Husipoo, that's something big. The thing is.. If you get a wireless modem which is a linksys. If you know the right way. You could probably pull from somebody else's connection. I know they did a compitition the one time to find the most wireless connections in LA. There were like 5 teams or more. I forget. But they found hundreds of open routers that were wireless. That's sortof like theift but it was a idea.

we where going over 50 with wireless bridges and brouters for Shell Oil out in the fields in Texas, and down in Africa also for the Game Wardens remote locations and such.

Did the Apache reservation out at White River Moutain res in the Tonto National rever, Navjo reservation at Window Rock, military installations and such.. but you have to boost and also do some hopping..

I've been up over 250 feet before, kinda neat

had to fly in on Helocopters to figure out where to put the towers before. It was a really interesting job, but also stressful and almost did me in at the end...

now I work from home, only talk with other techs and never have to put another freaking suit or tie on again

anyway... Husipoo, if it is for work, you might get them to have it installed, maybe.. I will tell you this much though, it you do it without explicative permission your looking at a number of Federal charges when caught... and with they way they are watching colleges, I wouldn't bet on not being found out...

I did all the links for Michigan State up in East Lansing back in 1996 for internet connections around the campus and out to the local k12 school about 20 - 25 miles away...

they were up my butt like a roid the whole freaking time and not one of them had a clue about what was happening but all had to explain what I was doing and needed to do

seriously, with a survey and a drawing and the parts, cables made up and connectors solidered in place anyone can do it... all you have to do is read a GPS and you can rent a boy scout GPS to do that...
