Struggling with first Campaign mission

Howdy folks,

Sorry if this is the wrong section to ask game questions.

Anyways- So I am struggling on the first campaign mission. I went through the tutorial and did "ok" but I can't seem to invade successfully enemy territory on the first campaign..

I am able to hold most of space with little issue, have several economic starbases(overlapping planets), mining bases, carriers, large hulls and maxed out logistics.

I get several large fleets together and try to clear out the enemies secondary planet/star base and take very heavy losses. I can not seem to break their ships protecting the planet. While I am am invading they attack my star systems and hurt my economy. Seems like a vicious cycle where I loose my fleet, rebuild economy and re-attack.

I know this is a deep game and I could be doing 10 things wrong I just am not sure what.

I feel like I am just missing something here.

Would passing along a save game help?

Thanks!

The first mission is really just a crushing grindfest. The last drengin planet simply has too many defenses to deal with in any timely manner.

You'll want to colonize all the planets for the additional economy if you haven't already. Focus on defending your territory, teching up, and building several maxed-out fleets of large/huge ships. Snipe any individual scouting ships that sometimes get sent out, or if the AI unloads defenses from a shipyard, smash it, and don't let it ever get rebuilt - don't let the AI stack EVEN MORE defenses, basically. Once they're cornered with those last few planets with maxed out defenders, build a military starbase and max out every one of its % bonus modules. THEN you throw your fleets in.
