I've not come across any defences that can't simply be destroyed with a cronus from a far as long as you follow it with radar buildings, kill the orbital nullify and drop a nuke, all there base defence investment gone in 10 secs. if you opt early to build that many static defences you'll ultimately be sacrificing resources and in ashes who ever has the most resources can out build a turtle. Once you get a stack of Cronus you can walk through most defences.
think your issue is not base defences but lack of units by the time you get there, ashes is poor at moving an attacking army across a map, especially if that map is tight terrain with poor path finding., if someone has nukes, your army is forced to travel at snail paced speeds across the map building anti nukes with tiny radius which doesn't fully cover your army. and once you lose that army investment its very difficult to recover so yes on a larger map there is a tendency to turtle and sit behind base defences but only because the attacking armies on larger maps need realistically mobile orbital cover, because you can't get a large enough force close enough to the enemy front lines.
Yes, a Cronus is the way to go, but when you both have them or more it is not that simple. And which good player only builds one nullifier at a defence point nowadays as everyone knows about sniping. You'll have at least 3 there and AA and even a healing bay to repair them if necessary. Plus the building HP would have got some boosts too. And the defences are built up slowly so you don't suffer much in troop production issues. I know how to handle myself in a game and with with some of the top ranked players this is how it often plays out in custom games. PHC defences, backed by troops are hard to crack and and bring a game to an almost standstill very early on. Things should be more fluid and not need a Cronus or 3 to crack. Substrate defences could probably use a buff but I have less experience fighting against them as the vast majority of players have been going with PHC.
Maybe my opinions will change when I get to play some live players but there is a lack of content right now.
I haven't tried the new campaign as it wont let me.
I feel like too much is been done to Woo the ten or whatever supcom die hards who whinge on the steam forums.
The fact that the new brute comes as a single unit makes me so damn happy!
what exactly has been done to specifically cater to sup com players, the stat zoom was a natural progression of ashes as the game moves from small maps to larger maps and ultimately massive scale, one could even say it's escalating. it doesn't scale well and strat zoom helps a little to manage it On the larger maps.
If it all was currently ok as it is and required no change then current active players would be high, when I checked the other day highest number of concurrent players was 95..
agreed though, its really hard to give full feedback as there is no campaign and no ranked multiplayer and the mobile orbital nullifier is missing which begs the question what else arnt we testing. theres a thread for balance changes but ultimately it's the 5% that play multiplier / ranked which contribute most to balance discussion.
Are the AI actually using the new units? I haven't seen them use the artillery or the new aircraft. I guess I'll have to specifically look for it next time.

Do we have campaign access at this time? I'm big on campaigns and everything says "Coming Soon" when I try to start Memories, Imminent Crisis, or Escalation.
I'm in the VIP test build at the moment.
They do, played a game against phc ai and saw artillery fire from the new fixed artillery building and some heras.
as for the new air units, they are building the structure for it, but will have to let them live/ I survive long enough to see if they make use of it

The VIP build is really good for us to test the game and help out with bugs, and it does have a bunch of them so i want to know what has it been fixed and what not so we can keep helping as much as we can to make it a Bug free Release.
Pretty sure it's not the latest build as there is no obital nukifier unit, bit annoying as it's not really a test for VIP just an early look at an early build.
to be honest though, I haven't gone back to play it since that first go. Not a great sign. :/
i think it was the multiplayer ranked que which kept me logging in each day. Not really sure what to do when it's released. Which que I'm supposed to be sitting in bearing in mind the wait times can be 30 odd minS on average.
I have a couple of bug in escalation, maybe already fixed.First Escalation doesn't auto detect my 860m I have to right click the exe to have escalation run with the GPU.
Also there is one that is on ashes too. A super slow zoom I mentioned it in that thread

Oddly the shaking is gone in escalation but the slow zoon is still there.
Edit. Sorry about the slow zoom problem, I got confuse how to zoom in ashes. The zoom is ok. But the shaking in ashes fixed in Escalation remain. Maybe because escalation install is new, but then why reverting to a previous nvidia driver fix it?

Just been playing the beta, very much like Escalation. I see some of the maps need 6 cpu cores, does this include Hyper Threading or are 6 true cores needed? I only have an i5 4570, which is socket 1150, so no access to a 6 core cpu...
Does it say that somewhere? I've played most of the big ones and I'm on a 4 core machine. (8 including hyper threading) But I have not seen any pop ups or warnings about required cores.
