Hi everyone! I have but one question... in 27 parts ( /BackToSchool reference)
Kidding, just looking for any recommendations or preferences as to what everybody installs after doing a fresh windows install, but prior to making a new image for easy restoration.
So far, my list of installed software is fairly small:
Windows Updates
AMD Video Driver/Software package
Start8 (btw, talking Windows 8.1 here)
Fences
Mozilla Firefox (default) (with extensions, bookmarks handled via Firefox Sync)
Google Chrome (with extensions, no bookmarks stored)
Microsoft Keyboard software ( I use the natural keyboard - lots of configurable buttons along top)
Logitech Gaming Software (for G9x mouse)
Dropbox (no data stored on boot drive)
Mega (no data stored on boot drive)
KeePass (no data stored on boot drive)
I'll probably also throw on these:
MS Office Home & Student 2010
LogMeIn
Burning Software (ImgBurn)
VLC
Notepad ++
AstroGrep
Handbrake
7-zip
Webcam Software
Considering these:
Adobe Reader
SpeedFan
CPUID HwMonitor
Considering Leaving these off:
Steam (games not stored on boot drive anyway)
Bit Defender (would probably want latest version installed, so probably unnecessary having it pre-installed)
Plex Server (updated often so unlikely to be current; content stored on NAS)
That is about all I am thinking of at the moment. Any input is welcome, whether that is adding more to my pre-image install or removing some of my currently planned items.
Btw, what spurred this was finally, after YEARS of running the same install...
Windows boot drive just slowly filled up to most of the current 128 GB, so I bought a new, bigger SSD. Damn thing just wouldn't clone from my currently installed boot SSD. Tried the following software:
Samsung Data Migration (new drive is a Samsung 850 EVO 512 GB)
Minitool Partition
Macrium Reflect
Also tried cloning via DD with Ubuntu Live disc.
My guess is because the original install was via MBR (the way computer came pre-configured from ibuypower - don't think that was correct) instead of GPT and these programs were just not getting the whole boot thing copied correctly. Could also just have been Windows install getting flaky after all these years. (think it is just shy of 3 years) All those cloning programs were just super crash happy. Crashes taking down windows completely. Haven't had ANY programs crash windows 8 on me previous to this. Anyway, after 2 or 3 nights after work of trying to get that cloned I finally just said screw it, RE-INSTALL TIME!
Anyway, any input is very appreciated, and thanks in advance!
edit: Any opinions on Samsung Magician software that is included with the drive. Does anyone find it useful or necessary? Or is it just some more bloat to be running?
