what is the purpose of prototype weapons

I got a question on purpose of prototype weapons. They are researched at the same time, have the same stats, but cost more resources. Mass driver has the same damage as prototype durantium driver, but the last costs 12 durantium additionally.

If I remember correctly, weapons that cost resources are cheaper to make in terms of construction points.

Those prototype weapons used to have way higher stats until balance change about a year ago. Before this, your resources never get spend, so if you have 3 durantium mining then you could afford 3 prototype railgun since each take 1 durantium. The resources are refund once it is not in use. Currently they take less construction point to build.
