Reality Check

Reality Check

New Stardock Central, does it have in the display properities the WinStyles & Skins owners website that directs you to more pay for subscriptions. Really a time consumer!!

Also does this new component manager make you login and receive an e-mail from Stardock before each and every action on loading a different winstyle or anythink else when the mood stricks?

It also extracted and removed all the saves on backup CD in the drive and previous built skins!!!!from the old vesion, not friendly to a paid $60. customer when its says what you download you kept. Who wants to kept something that doesn't work anyway?

And does the chat and discussions load on my ram instead of Stardock servers. Isn't Stardocks browser setting on my system open to intrusions? How is my PC protected from anyone loading whenever and whatever they want? And what about theses links in the display panel can't someone link to all theses hyperlinks left in the display panel? If I can link out can't they link in? Is Stardock redirecting traffic from there servers to other sites with this new component manager, is that what they meant by loading the new component manager and biting the bullet.

I would like to know since the old component manager never worked and now the new isn't either. Actually the tial version was the only program that worked. Why do I feel crooked?

Koasati , nice to see your still with us! sorry, I though it was name calling. By the way I just love Stardock when I had the trial version and once it starts working again I'm sure I'll be the first to bake a cake.

However, I can't risk more problems than its already given me,and really if I have to access theses programs separately from another website, whats the point, by the time everyone has created a website for there winstyles it would cost a fortune. I still had installed the trial built in Nov. but it extracted it. And yes I have all and everything installed on my harddrive including all packages, icons, windowblinds, winstyles, objectbar, but nothing loads. Also had a second backup CD of programs. I have plenty of memory, ram, and whatever. I also have the old CM that woun't uninstall and the New Component Manager that woun't uninstall. I also have the CD to install and I've also downloaded from the website. So whats the problem? Your guess is as good as mine.

I am somewhere between totally and thoroughly lost.

Run and install Stardock Central....it does NOT bite, nor does it endanger your system any more than Microsoft has done originally.

If you think your system will somehow be endangered by using this program you are mistaken.  Your system is already 'endangered' because you hook up to the internet.

Other than that there is absolutely no difference.

If you have difficulties with describing your problem, maybe you can ask a friend with a computer to help you out to formulate your problems and to e-mail these to [email protected]

Please stop posting to this thread. It will make things worse.

Thanks.

Let me be the first to say I agree with you, Stardock has had terrific support with e-mail and by phone but problems presist so thats why I'm here. I'm not trying to badmouth Stardock, I'm simply trying to get it working, I can't continue with this night and day its making me sick, as I think you said you noticed. I'm sorry but Stardock has caused my problem and I'm legitimate my parents are married.

Why are you ignoring my posts?

Ok, I figured out one thing. The hyperlinks you mention in Display Properties is where the skins are are shown in the skin preview pane and certainly has nothing to do with SDC. It's always been there in WindowBlinds. That sends you to a WindowBlinds page where you can click on a link to go to the Wincustomize library. I've never used that hyperlink in the skin preview for anything. Ignore it. It's no biggie and it's nothing new.

Yes and with it you have temporary files that are downloaded using your firewall, that can be removed now or later and so how many browsers can you have functioning on your PC at one time? And if you have this browser with a server that has access thur this browser they also have access to your PC right or am I missing something here? I know that there was access to my PC while I was away from the system because SDC extracted files, all you have to do is read thats its extracting files while downloading the programs in updates. Are you stating I'm wrong in this matter?

Downloaded temporary files using your firewall? Sorry, but that makes no sense. Your browser downloads the internet files when you browse, not your firewall. And you can use a number of broswers on your computer at one time. Right now I'm using the WC skinbrowser and I also have IE open to other sites. Sometimes I have three different browsers open for different purposes.

And you keep talking about servers with access. Do you understand that when you use you browser on the internet to surf it is downloading data to your computer from servers of the websites you visit? That's precisely what the SDC browser component does, exactly what your IE does, downloads data, whether web pages or the discussion board data to your PC. Presumably you're using this discussion board through your internet browser. SDC's and WC's browser works the exact same way.

SDC extracting files? Are you talking about when it updates itself? It's adding files to itself to update. "Extracting" doesn't mean deleting in that context. It means it's "unloading" the new files to install to itself. Only the SDC updates for itself can be automatically downloaded and installed. It doesn't do that for any other programs. So yes, you are wrong.

I'm sorry, a major problem in this communication is that it appears that you do not understand how your PC and programs work.

As for bypassing your firewall, legit programs can only do that if you seriously misconfigured your firewall. If you're using ZoneAlarm, you have to had given these programs permission to contact the internet just like IE, so your firewall is not bypassed.

And as for newsgroups, as I said in a previous thread, you need to use Outlook Express' newsreader to use them. Anyone can read and post there.

MadIce -Sorry, thats why I'm here to learn all I can, if I was smart in theses matters I wouldn't have to ask someone else. Everyone, thanks for all your imput and advice.
I already have someone e-mailing me which I have sent screen shots of the problems, because I don't know what the problem is or whats causing it, but if someone knows how to uninstall theses programs completely, so I can do a clean reinstall, let me know. I might come back and e-mail the screen shots if this person doesn't know whats causing problems.

Very strange indeed.

Polyphemus, my dislike of SDC is probably my own irritation with the first few betas and their conflict with CM, I've loaded the latest version of SDC and will give it a run of course .... and be very happy if it does work as well as most SD proggies do!
As for CM, I tend to think that 'if it ain't broke then don't try and fix it' .... but that's just me.
It does sound like you need to do a reformat and reload .... the 'problems' you seem to have experienced are more like a contaminated OS than anything else.
As for security, try loading the 'problem' program(s) on a seperate partition.

For the record, the security enhancements I was referring to for SDC are for our protection, to make it more difficult for people to pirate the software without having paid for it.

As far as I can tell (and it's truly difficult), Polyphemus is deeply paranoid about security issues with pretty much anything that moves. I think we are all agreed that there is an ESL issue touching his posts (at least I hope that's it).

Polyphemus, until you contact Nakor directly, I don't think you'll get anywhere - the Stardock team in general and Kris in particular will work hard at solving your problem but this isn't the best place to do it. See if you can itemize your concerns as clearly and consisely as possible.

Good luck to you all!

Dolores,

I think I am starting to figure out some of your issue.

First, the links in WinStyles that you are talking about are most likely the author info links that talk "about" the WinStyles.  If not, then a screenshot would be helpful.

Nothing in any of the programs has changed by installing Stardock Central.  The only thing that has changed is the delivery mechanism.  The programs are identical no matter if they were installed through component manager or through Stardock Central.

The links to "pay for more stuff" that you are referring to is shareware links.  If you are in a section of Stardock Central that you haven't paid for, it shows links to the shareware versions (they are marked as shareware). They are fine to download and install (and that is why they are linked there).  Stardock Central is meant to give access to all that is Stardock.  We have so many products, that many people did not know where to find them to try them.  If you are seeing these shareware versions in the Object Desktop tab, please go to: tools>register products and fill in your Object Desktop account information.

Stardock Central isn't anymore dangerous than surfing the web.  It doesn't connect to any servers besides Stardock servers.  You could use the browse area and connect to the rest of the web, but that is just an IE window.  It also uses the same login information as your WinCustomize login information, which is secure.

The issue about the back up CD being over written is still a complete mystery as there is absolutely no logical way that would happen.  I can only assume that you were using a CDRW and there was some freak accident.  I can assure you that SDC does not do that.

And, just for the record for everyone else, she is not crazy.  She originally got some freak accident build that was made for a reviewer in the beginning.  She may be extremely difficult to under stand but she is not insane.

Oh, Dolores, I am "Angie" from support if you wondered....

If you want to "star over" I would suggest uninstalling all the individual components through the component manager and Stardock Central.  then use add/remove to uninstall Component Manager and Stardock Central.  Reboot.  Redownload, install, and register Stardock Central then register the products that you purchased.  Use them.  If they are functioning correctly, then install your backed up skins and themes.
