Problem with research times

Each item available for research shows it will take xx months to complete. I had a capital ship flying around picking up space debris etc and caught yet another of those research completes in weeks rather than months (forget how many I'd had at this point). I believe it completed Hyperspace travel but could be wrong. All the remaining research items jumped to 1000 months.
On the next turn they were back to the correct settings for each research item. As soon as I discovered another item, the normal way after xx months, all the items went back to 1000 months again.
It seems once it starts it continues to happen.
