Just curious, how do you pronounce OS X?

Just curious, how do you pronounce OS X?

I always assumed it was pronounced "O.S. ten", but today I heard a girl call it "O.S. Ex". I started laughing repeating "O.S. Sex"? The she tells me "Yeah, that's the way it'S said in English", being French I really could not argue much with her cause I must admit I haven't heard it very often said aloud in English (maybe a few times on TEch TV, but I'm pretty sure they call it "O.S. Ten". Anyway, I have serious doubts that she is right.

So, is it "O.S. ten" or "O.S. Ex" (OS Sex)?

I wonder if Apple also found in their research, that the French word for 10 sounds like dicks, so market it as OS dix to the French speakers.

You think that's bad?  We have a bunch of T-shirts around here promoting
Windows Server 2003.  The slogan on the back is: "Do more with less".
Now, what guy is going to wear that one?

OS XI will surely be Oh Sexi. there is no excaping this nefarious trend.

BTW - last time i checked, dix was "deese". get those nonfrancophile minds out of the gutter!

Always been OS Ten to me. The mac has always had OS and the number. Mac OS 6, 7, 8, 9, and now OS X. It doesn't make sense to me to call it OS Ex as it doesn't follow the pattern. It's the tenth version of the Mac OS not the Xth.

However having said that if you go to Apples site to look for updates to OS X you will see the following:

Mac OS X v10.2

Which makes no sense being pronouced Mac OS Ten Version 10.2
and sounds better as Mac OS Ex version 10.2

As it's not version 10.2 of Mac OS Ten (it's v10.2 of Mac OS) none of it makes any sense. It's all confusing.

Conclusion : Call it what you like. Some people will laugh at you for one pronunciation and others for another.

It's like the whole linux pronunciation thing. Absolutely pointless. Give me Windows anyday with it's simple and obvious pronunciations. Anybody here use Windows Exp or Ex Pee?

Yes, as Bangkokboy said, "dix" is pronounced "dees" in French.

As for Windows XP, I don't think it works because the S of Windows is pronounced Z. So it would be moer like "Windows Zex Pee".

Anyway, it's not all that important, I was just wondering what was the right way to pronounce OS X, it seems there is no concensus, so I'll just keep on calling it OS Ten (I prefer that).

And Bangkokboy, that was funny... But maybe you shouldn't speak, huh?

I think if Apple intended it to be pronounced 'OS 10' then they would have marketed it as such. The shift over to the roman numeral is mainly down to the fact that the letter 'X' is perceived to make something sound futuristic. I've heard Steve Jobs refer to it as 'OSX' before, and as long as I have worked in a book store with constant contact with the main publisher handling OS X books the reps have also always called it 'OSX'. I think it's only really Mac users who call it 'OS 10', and that's mainly out of habit as they've been used to referring to the OS by its number.

Believe it or not, it is called O.S. 10 and true Apple aficionados will laugh at those who call it "X".

Being a die hard Mac fan that is true...
I don't talk about Macs. they are forbidden from my vocabulary.

Thats very, very, very, very sad.

I see now that there is nothing dirty about saying OS 10 in French, but I believe there is subliminal messages in the English titles of software from Apple and Microsoft. Why did Apple go from Arab numerals to Roman numbers when it came up to version 10. It seems to me the answer may be so they can have the subliminal sex in the name. I remember reading in another form many months ago that large corporations including Apple and Microsoft hire psychologists to help them come up with subliminal messages to make their marketing more effective.
