Looking for a book ...

Hi guys and gals - was wondering if any of you have read a sci-fi book about a girl who can travels dimensions from earth through rings that only a select portion of people can see - in each world people transform into (in the lava world) umm i think big blue bear/lizard thing, in the water world, mer-people - umm the only other things I can remember about it is that she was a bigger lizard thing than normal, and a smaller mer-person than normal (everyone else conserved mass) oh and she was an orphan -

i know - jumbled mess of memories - but i loved the book back in the 70's

Actually you might possibily be interested in Tad Williams new series Outland which is kind of the same thing but based in a Virutal Reality world run across the net which is also being controlled by a group attempting to take control of the world. People go into a coma and while in the coma live in the virutal word as if it is real.

It can get to be a long read at times with the different books, but over all it is really a wild read.

It sounds like Spaceling by Doris Piserchia. Published by DAW books in 78. The main character in this book is a deliquent girl named Daryl. She's got some mutation that allows her to see an walk through colored rings to other dimensions and take the form of the life-forms found there.
