Sad news, guys.  It seems Kobe Bryant has died in a helicopter crash.  He was a great player.

I just heard on the Pro Bowl that Kobe's 13 year old daughter died in the crash as well as a few others.  Sad, she hadn't even lived yet.

Sad yet true Jim. We lost Kobe and his 13 y/o daughter Gianna this morning. I have no words for this, it's beyond comprehension. I've lived in CA my entire life, I've been a Lakers fan since 1964. If you cut me I bleed purple and gold. LA and the sports world are in shock. It was an honor and pure pleasure watching Kobe grow from High School phenom when we traded for him in 1996 until 5 NBA championships later he retired in 2016. Right now, the world has set aside it's petty differences with a total outpouring of both grief and admiration. People either loved or hated Kobe, but at the end of the day, everyone respected him.

I'm still numb though, this hurts.

This is a sad business.  I don't know that an official cause has been announced yet, but what is known is the helicopter was flying in very bad weather ( dense fog ).  The pilot had a special clearance to do so under SVFR ( special visual flight rules ), but as a former recreational pilot ( fixed wing only ) I would never have ventured into such weather.  I hope this tragedy  will bring about a reevaluation of this kind of flight clearance.
