We have all seen how the Internet in the past decade has transformed the way we communicate with one another.

Here we are, people from around the world communicating in ways that would have seem unimaginable.

I know on a daily basis it seems like the world has been turned upside down. For instance, on our IRC channel I might be holding conversations with Adam who writes SkinStudio, working from Poland while in another chat window I'm talking to Alberto who's working from Italy and Neil from UK. Meanwhile, in IM I might be talking to Alexandrie and Treetog who themselves work together as part of Pixtudio despite one being in Brazil and the other in Canada.

But what is the next step? People have predicted virtual reality for a long time to come. What do you imgaine being the next step of communication and how do you imagine it being done?

i remember a new videoconferencing camera and software that allows people to move viruial 3d objects such as cube, ball, whatever. i can't remember what the name for it however

it will need massive bandwidth however.

It would be cool to walk into a virtual world and meet and shake their hands and see their body gestures in a virtual sense...maybe even eyeblinks and hand movements...but that would mean "strapping on a few things" in order to accomplish that ie some sort of electronic sensor that detect movement and then process it through the puter and stuff. Much like some of the high end animating is done for movies when actors do certain things that are then used as input into a high tech graphics application.

What would be the ultimate *fantasy* idea for virtual reality? Well if everyone had mega-bandwidth...it would be kinda cool to be any fantasy character you wanted and be a virtual avatar of any character you chose and you could move and pose and BE that avatar as he moved with your movements etc.

Ah well. Now we're just dreamin'

Hum, I wouldn't describe this as Virtual Reality. My understanding of VR is "something that seems real but is not", something like the Matrix. To me, communication via the Internet is just the plain old reality, but using a new medium.

The first people who used the telephone probably also had the same kind of awe about it.

I would like real time video phones....but with the option to turn the video part off  

Just look at how far mobile phone have come.  I got my first one 8 years ago, and talk time was almost $1.00 per minute.  It was common for them to have a "briefcase" attached to them back then.  (Mine didn't have one, but it was freakin' huge....)  It's amazing how fast technology is changing.
