Folder Portal blinks when rolled down

Hi,

I'm trying Fences for the first time. Everything seems fine and smooth, except for when i create fence via folder portal. If i activate auto roll-up on a fence created with folder portal, there is a slight blink as soon as i hover the mouse over the fence to display the content of the file. The blink only concerns whatever is within the said folder portal (the fence) and nothing else. It last for less than a second, as if it was refreshing the content of folder and then display files as normal. If i let the fence rolled down, without the auto roll-up option, it works without any issue as the files are always displayed anyway.

Also, this issue DOES NOT happen with the normal fences created from scratch and filled manually or automatically with files. Those are really smooth and quickly display the content of the fence when rolled down. Why can't it be the same with folder portal? That blink/refresh is really annoying, especially if you have to access that folder regularly. I even prefer having to access the folder the old way on windows explorer than getting that blink every time I roll down the fence, and use the software only for the desktop ordering.

Does someone know any way of working around that issue or if it's going to be fixed anytime soon?

Thank you.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I can't reproduce your issue on my system, except for portal fences that link to cloud folder such as Dropbox etc. If your issue also happen on cloud folders try this solution : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#folderportalsempty

Thanks.

Unfortunately, this is not related to cloud issue. It's just a normal folder redirecting via your folder portal system.

I made a gif to illustrate my issue. "Games" fence is working super smoothly, but the two others (it's the same file actually, named "utilitaire") have this blinking, no matter what i try.

You mean that you don't have that at all and that your folder portal created display the files as smoothly as the normal fences? (and what if you put many files in the said folder, or maybe it depends form which hard drive it comes from, i don't know)

I really thought that it came from the software (due to the fact that Fences has to fetch that file content everytime it rolls back up, thus the reset). If it's me, I have no idea what could have I done wrong. I don't have anything really fancy installed on my PC that could conflict with that and i usually don't have any issue like that. My W10 is updated as well.

Any idea of what i could try to do?

Thank you.

Alright, thank you.

The only thing i'd like to know is if i am the only having this issue.

If you don't recall anyone having this issue ever, it's worth for me sparing some time trying to troubleshoot it. Cause it means there is something wrong in my installation.

If it's a bug coming from your end, i'll just wait for your answer. I thought that maybe as it is a very slight visual bug (very annoying for me, but probably no big deal for most people, if noticeable at all) it hasn't be reported yet.

That's really the only thing that's bugging me about your software right now after i've been using it for a couple of days now. It'd be a shame i couldn't resolve it.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

But you are the only one who has reported that issue .

I don't have it , so I guess a number of things could be the cause.

If you delete the fence and make a new one still the same ?

Haha! Found the issue! (but not resolved it).

I did a reinstallation, nothing happened. But then i noticed that this weird flickering reminded me of some issues I had with some games and softwares which sometimes have trouble with 144hz refreshing rate. And sure enough, when i change my monitor from 144hz to 60hz, Folder Portal rolling up/down becomes as smoothly as it can be.

So here it is. It comes from you and me at the same time. Fences isn't made for 144Hz monitors i reckon? Can someone else confirm me he has the same blink/flicker issue (only with folder portal rolled up, not the normal fence) with a 144hz monitor (also 1440p, but i don't think resolution matters). If so, could we expect a fix for that in the near future or maybe an immediate fix you guys could suggest by doing some manipulations any user could do?

I really love that Fences software, but i'm definitely NOT switching back to 60hz monitor just for it, lol.

Thank you.

You are certainly not the only one who has reported that issue. I've found people on the steam forums having this problem since 2019 and other people experiencing the same thing.

I'm also one of those people and I wish I could bear good news but I've not found any solution either. I have a 120hz monitor but even if I switch back to 60hz it doesn't fix it.

Hi we are in November and I have the exact same issue and like you only with Portal Fences the normal Fence acting normally

the only solution I found is to delete fences clean the install folder and re install it  and its work for a while and again stop to work normally

Same here, been expected for an update for a long time...

folder portals are most useful with cloud folders, and it blinks all the time...

I can also report having this exact issue with folder portals while only working with two 60 Hz monitors. Though my folders are on a separate drive instead of the C drive, so is my desktop folder with no impact on the smoothness of regular fences.

Not a huge problem, but an annoyance nonetheless.

Hello,

The issue is known and has been logged in. Just to collect data, can you list down these information.

  1. Windows version, please use Winver.exe to get Windows full version numbers.
  2. Fences version.
