Snapshots not restoring (dual monitors)

My system has two different monitors with the desktop extended from the primary (which strangely identifies as Monitor #2) and the secondary (identifies as #1).  Both monitors are set to 1920x1080, and I have fences created that display on both monitors.

Whenever I upgrade my nVIDIA Quadro P1000 driver (currently 442.05) all of my fences move to the primary monitor (#2) and there are none on the secondary.  When I try to restore a snapshot with the correct layout the program acts like it is restoring the snapshot but nothing changes. I have to manually move all the fences that should be on the secondary monitor back to it.  VERY annoying.

Any recommendations as to how to fix this problem?  (Yes, I have read the FAQs and searched this forum)

Thanks Basj.  My monitors are configured correctly but I did change the settings as described in the second article.  The layouts still wouldn't restore however I manually moved everything back and took a snapshot.  I'll see what happens then next time there is a video driver update.

Just installed a major Windows update tonight, had the same problem occur, and my snapshot would not restore.  Next steps?

It possible your main/primary monitor setting get swap again after the Windows update. Try the solution again and see if it help. If not, please try The purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling. Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Thank you.  Presumably I also follow the instructions for moving configurations to a new PC also insofar as backup and restore is concerned also?

I performed the purge and reinstall, then attempted to apply the backed-up layout. Unfortunately it didn't work.  I've manually moved the fences back to where they should be and taken another snapshot.  I expect the will happen again in a few days, and we'll see if the new snapshot can be restored.

hello,

i seem to have the same problem.

there must have been an W10 update one/two days ago. now my desktop background color is all black. i can see the Fences (Fences 3) existing, but their background color is also black. when i go "configure fences" and i select an desired previous layout and try to restore it, no layout change happens. i did run the [Purge_Fences.bat] and reinstalled Fences 3, but it doesn't make a change to the problem, that when selcting an desired layout and restoring it, the actual layout won't change.

please help, as the current situation is making Fences useless.

thanks

hello AzDude, Basj,

thanks for the extremely quick response !

but both links have not helped. also i have detached the laptop from the docking station, and ran it on its own.

the fences are existing, eg. their names are displayed and also the menu icons at each frame are selectable, but all background color is dark black, and thus no frames visible.

when selecting "configure fences" and then going to "layout & snapping" and selecting the desired theme (snapshot) and do restore a question window will come up "take snapshot before restoring" with 3 options, and i'm selecting (2) No/just restore snapshot, then i can see the icons on the desktop changing slightly their position for about 1..2 sec, and then returning where they have been, but the desired color arrangment is not happening - still all background in dark black.

i had done such operation on a similar case a longer while ago, and it worked then. now it won't.

the W10 is Enterprise N ver. 1803 , OS build 17134.1550

hopefully you can find a solution,

thanks, lutz

Please try the cleanboot steps to see if there is conflicting application with Windows. https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot

And try disable/un-checked "Translucent Fences backgrounds" (second arrow in the screenshot below) and restart explorer.exe to see if it help.

hello basj,

my last msg was already fairly late, europ. time 23:00.

before shutting the laptop i had tried the Fences settings for "color & appearance" and playing with the background style&color i managed to change the fences color different to the desktop color. it appeared that fences is working but something not with the windows 10 color setting. tried to change the windows color setting but it stood dark black.

this morning i tried again - went on the desktop with right mouseclick > personalise > choose background color - and selected the one i had previously when all was good. now it changed and also the fences areas changed to an slightly different color and as i wanted.

cannot tell you, why it didn't work yesterday.

maybe the W10 update might not have been fully installed yet ?

anyway, now all good.

many thanks for your help !

ps. i cannot add an reply to the thread posting - msg from Stardock: for a new user i'm not allowed to create any more replies

if you like you can paste my answer into the thread for the sake of closing the matter.
