Start10 will not stay open when opening it

When I open Start10 with another application (or even the keyboard sometimes) it shuts down immediately, stopping me from accessing it! Bad news. This started after installing WindowFX so I removed WindowFX but it continued, but not as badly. Like any other program, it should open and stay open unless I click outside it. This needs to be fixed and certainly when using it with another program of yours! I need to be able to easily do things on my computer.

Well AzDude, after reviewing the batch file I did as instructed. Got it working again but unfortunately, the problem continues. As I had said, it started with WindowFX, so much that I gave up on the trial because of it. Then it continued without WindowFX, which it never had done. So I decided to try WindowFX again and submitted this problem issue here.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more information on your system.

  1. Windows version, please use Winver.exe for full Windows version numbers.
  2. Start10 Version numbers.
  3. WindowFX version numbers.
  4. Is both Stardock's product installed in its default location? Which is a good idea for it to work properly in current Windows 10 system setting.
  5. I wonder if Start10 will work normally if you just turn off WindowFX instead of uninstalling it.
  6. If (5) work, than turn it on again and goes to WindowFX config windows->Animations tab->Start menu->try those animation and see if any of it work.

Try that and report back.

Thanks

Hello Basj,

   1. Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.804) - Windows 10

   2. 1.96

   3. 6.1 (trial thus far, though I'd imagine that would not affect the problem)

   4. All default. Note that I also have Fences (latest version), also in its default location.

I mention it in case it could be the culprit

   5. More complicated so I'll answer below

First, originally I never had the problem. It only started when FX came along.

The problem is random. That said, when FX is installed and running it happens about 85% of the time. I disabled it to no avail. I closed it down, right down to the task manager. No luck. As it was on trial I reported it to Stardock, to no avail, so I removed it. Did the problem go away? No. However, it happened about 45% to 50% of the time. As it never happened before, FX changed something somewhere -- which is why in mentioned Fences.

I also noticed that FX did not restore other things. For example on some minimized windows they don't minimize nicely but just disappear instantly after I removed it. Windows became a bit odd but maybe the culprit is around there.

Due to that oddity I decided to give FX another try to also get a bit of normality. I also thought it best the make sure the issue is addressed by you. I have been a customer for years and used many of your solutions, starting with Window Blinds then Object Dock (which I replaced with Nexus as it works better since issues with that were not resolved).

I hope this helps you find the problem!

First, I would like you to check if you have any corrupted system files.

Please try the following:

  1. For Win8/10 Users: Open the Start Screen, and type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator' from below.
  2. Type: sfc /scannow
  3. Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes)
  4. If the SFC finds errors, but cannot fix them, please also run the following command in the same command prompt window:

The above command should assist with replacing any damaged or problematic system files. Please note, however, since it may require restoring certain files, this process can take some time and you will need to be patient until it has completed.

Once you have done that do the WindowFX purge and reinstall as mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/485903/windowfx-support-faq#reinstalling

Try those and report back and we can go from there.

Thank you,

Well, here's the outcome:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

   Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I guess there would be little to be done beyond that. Note that I strive to keep it 100% as this is a development computer with Visual Studio and the like on it. I am glad that I seem to have managed to do that!

Hummm... I hadn't done that since there were no issues and after all, I installed it again yesterday just before I posted to you.

Anyway and unfortunately I did after your last question. Well, it lost all of its configurations without saving them anywhere. After that, well, it got considerably worse!

After I did the scanning Windows said to reboot to install or update. That was a bit strange as it was updated the week before last, when there was their last update (I keep it fully updated). Anyway, it actually improved. It didn't go away but the problem went down to about 30% to 40% of time.

Now of course it got really bad so I hope this helps you solve it.

Not really sure what configuration you have on WindowFX? Please elaborate more on that. And what got considerably worse? Can't boot up?

Not really strange for Windows 10 updates, since I am having to reboot my system again tonight for another updates since my last updates before this one was just yesterday. And that one strangely stop my Windows Explorer Search box to function properly.

As a side note, I never have similar report from other concerning Start10 and WindowFX, I think it still best if you could post a video of this issue so we can understand it better.

Watch the video. That got worse and as you can see, it is pretty useless! I even repeated the scanning again, to no avail.

As to FX, I had to configure things again on it.

Problem is, how do I upload a video (MP4)?

Upload it to a good sharing site and link it here. Or you can upload to youtube and share the link.

Hello,

I saw it and you are launching the Start menu from ObjectDock? Is the issue happen if you launching it from your Start button on the taskbar? or using the keyboard Windows button?

Thank you,

It happens from the dock or any application that loads it and never ever happened before. It does happen on occasion now with the keyboard. Overall, it should open and stay opened until closed.

No Start panel don't stay open. From my observation, It open and stay open until there is something else have focus. This is normal behavior of Start panel since Windows 7. Anyway I have forward your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

Something seems to be randomly taking the focus away rather quickly. It's just curious in that it did not happen before FX. Maybe it is monitoring things and manages to take the focus away when monitoring. Probably a developer has to look at it to figure out the issue.

IF it happens with WinFX uninstalled, it's not WinFX.

Does this happen, at all, with ObjectDock unloaded?
