basic low tech savvy display question

hi all, my laptop runs normally at 1600 x 1200 and looks fine. i would like to drop it down to 1280 x 1024, partly becauase the wallpapers look better, but mostly because the text is too darn small.

Trouble is that whenever I do that the colours go streaky and blocky instead of being smooth.

I am running W2k on a Dell Inspiron 8000.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Strange...... when you change to the lower resolution, have you checked to see if the amount of colors being used is getting automatically changed too? Might be worth checking if they are getting reduced to 256. Just a thought............

Ah.....non CRT....my guess is you need to use a matching 'proportional' size.....1600x1200 down to 1024x768 would be better....altering the 'screen proportions' is probably a bad thing on a laptop display....

Thanks, checked that but the colours are still funny.

It acts worse when there is a gradient - eg running from green to blue. Instead of being smooth, each shade is identifiable.

Having said all that, maybe I should stop whinging and just use skins that it doesn't show on!

Jafo you may be right, but 1280x1024 is an option given as a default. I don't think I'm desperate enough to go any further down - I'll just have to cope.

1280x960 is close to the one you 'want'....and might work better....

OK, one more question.

I can set my monitor to 1600 x 1200, 1400 x 1050, 1280 x 1024, 1024 x 768, but no 1280 x 960.

Is there a way to manually configure that in w2k?

It's important NOT to push a monitor/screen to an unsupported res/refresh rate....when you do you will wish you hadn't...

almost as bad as over clocking without enough cooling oddly enough

Have you resized the wallpaper?

Shrink it proportionally or it might get the bends. But that should fix the back ground. You should also have an option in your Laptops BIOS for setting the screen to automatically/dynamically adjust to fill the screen. This pretty much ensures the display and chip set on the low level control things to keep them in the correct dimensions.

Kind of like putting a Magnifying Glass in front of small text to draw it out.
Then your not trying to graphically edit a bunch of things only to find out its a bios display setting....

IBM Thinkpads have this option because of the display also working as a Generic TV monitor when watching DVDs.

Dell should have something similar though I am not sure what they would call it in the bios.

It should be listed on the web site as something like * automatic/dynamic display resize/adjustment * or some such.
