Advice re: possible worm???

Suddenly IE won't work at all. I have tried sys restore. Cannot access online virus scan. Norton not finding anything at all. I was thinking about re-installing from disc, but if it is a worm or virus it might wipe out the disc. What should I do?

word works, defrag works, sys restore works, netscape works, trillian works.

If this comes through underlined it is not intentional...

If it is a virus, SYS restore won't do any good. Why don't ya get on the chat, you'll probably get an answer faster.

stardock central doesn't work, wincustomize doesn't work. Only netscape (good thing I wanted to see if anything changed and installed it about a month ago)

Open Task Manager and see if IExplorer is running ....if it is , kill it.

I was reading a newsgroup with a lot of political dissention, and I followed a link. Big mistake, but I do have a firewall and norton.

No...IE..not Explorer. Look in the process' running for 'iexplorer.exe' (could be more then one) SDC, WC Browser and IE all run off the same engine...

If I open IE it will act like it is trying to connect and it just cant

it loads to about 34% and sits

I tried to do an online scan through netscape but the engines required tell me they cannot find the plugin folder, even when I point to it directly

A virus won't affect your disk....assuming you mean CD disk...it's read-only...

In task manager you are looking for instances of 'iexplore.exe', not 'explorer.exe'....the latter is your shell....the former is the Web browser.

If a failed process is still running [but not showing as a window on screen] opening, or trying to open further instances will do nothing.....you'll need to 'kill' any existing ones first....

You know in the add/remove section for windows? I tried to reinstall through that and it says something like resources needed 0.00%

I tried to redownload IE6 and got to a download station, but it wouldn't download anything.

GM....if it's opening, try it offline and delete cookies and cache files....that'll help...

I did restore, and rebooted with that.

Then i just rebooted... twice.

Would turning it off, and then back on be better?

IE is not in the task manager except when I try to use it. It goes away when I close the browser.

GM - You're doing things that are dependent on the IE engine...until we figure out what the problem is it's not going to let you do anything short of using a CD...did you in fact try a cold re-boot?

In IE under File click work offline. In Internet Options, delete cookies and delete temporary internet files. Re-start IE. This is beginning to sound like a firewall problem...
