How do I advance turns?

I could not advance to turn 2 from turn 1 - I could not find an icon or anything to click on to advnce to next turn

it's the button on the bottom right corner of the screen

There was no button in the bottom right corner of the screen - at least not for me.

the TAB key also works. there should be a button in the bottom right corner though, if it's not there your screen might be cutting stuff off.

I fiddled with things a bit, and i finally got the tab button to appear- apparently, you MUST have  a ship queued up in the shipyard (how do I get the shipyard to idle?) and you can't skip any tasks that are brought up.

This is correct. This is something fairly common in turn based 4X games now to prevent new players from accidentally forgetting to do an important task.
