It's been useful for me, just don't expect them to do all of the games. Most of em come with a crappy video card. Hmm I would disrecommand alienware, even with kickass laptops, since laptops can't be upgraded too much and gets old pretty fast. I recommand a 1,500 to 2,000 buck range laptops, they'll do almost everything alienware can do.

Useful as in business, school, or (last but certainly not least) skinning. Getting a laptop just so you can play some of those 'high-end' games is incredibly poor judgement IMHO. Games are (point of fact) a waste of time...They might be fun, but they really arent productive. If you absolutely *need* a laptop and cannot get by without one, then by all means, get one...But if you dont need one, save your money for something more worth while. (College tuition perhaps)

If your going to spend that much then spend it on something far beyond that AlienWare...

I also had a thing for them for a bit, but after searching around some I found that they are not all that great a system for the price you pay...

We have a number of IBM T and R model laptops here. They are tools used for techs who travel and need to take work with them along with utilities and such. Mine I have setup for doing digital art and as a tool. Though I will be getting a 17 inch display laptop in the future to keep with me, it is not because it is a good option. But based upon the fact that I want it, I do not need it in the least. Used to be at one time that they both meant the samething (I want = I need desperatly) but now I know there is a huge difference. Which is why I keep saying in the future, one day I will be in front of the laptop I want, online or not, and I will buy it. But not before I know I have 3 to 4 grand to piss away.

anyway...

Personally I think that if you were to buy a $900.00 dell or some such and then put goether a $1500.00 desktop you would be better served all the way around...

It does sound like you need one, but like bakerstreet said, you can get one of pretty good quality bewteen 800 and 1600 dollars.

I have been looking around myself for a laptop for consulting work and I have seen some really nice ones.

I know what you really want; that cooool Alienware cover! Dell's have nice covers too you know.

Could always make your own mod (home built cool computer) Watch TV every so often and they show what people have made. It would definally teach you many things. I'm going to rebuild my home computer with see through case, lights, and all types of cool Shiznic.

IBM T and R models are the way to go in my opinion and having a fully optioned laptop run for
6 hours on one battery is only a plus if you've ever traveled.

IBM honestly makes dell lappies look sick. If I was gonna mortgage my house for a laptop, that would be the way to go. I have a p90 thinkpad that is still making a good wireless stereo and e-book reader 9 years beyond cutting edge, lol.

IBM doesn't focus on grandmas and high-school kids, they have a different focus group. You'll probably not ever be assailed with "Dude! Yer gettin a Thinkpad!", nor will I expect you to ever see asinine "IBM interns" commercials.

I've used a Dell laptop, and I have used several Thinkpads. In my experience the quality is altogether different. One feels like a toy, the other feels like a computer. If you have used both, Kona, your experience may be different.
