I suspect that the earth's spin north progression is at fault. each 10,000 years, summer becomes winter, and versa.

Kona, for your information, Fuzzy was refering to the fact that the Winter solstice is the longest night of the year.  Cause actually, although for some reason mankind felt the desire to have 4 seasons, the year is actually really only divided in two. From the day where the sun reaches the highest point in the sky (around 21st of june) to them day where the sun is the lowest at its daily peak (around december 21). We have reached that date. From now on, the sun will increasingly rise earlier and set later. Our days are going to get longer and longer until the summer solstice. In that respect, yes, we can consider we have reached mid-winter.

Of course, that's in the northern hemisphere. Jafo would say quite the reverse.

Found some more info. It's actually 26,000 years not merely 10,000 years.

Dec 21st is the point at which the sun is at it's lowest altitude and 'stationary'. Due to the uneven tilt in the Earth's axis sunset and sunrise times don't quite match. Here earliest sunset is Dec 13th at 15:46 and latest sunrise is Dec 30th at 08:22. It can vary from that year to year and the difference in summer is a lot closer.

I put my tree up on the 13th and take it down on the 30th as per tradition. Though I do forego the tradition of burning the tree...

Nah...let's face it....Stonehenge is a freak random arrangement of rocks...and it's just given the Druids a few thousand years to find some connection or other to validate their existence....
