where are you putting the wallpapers that you download?

If you download a wallpaper and set it as your background and then change or delete the image, when you re-start your PC it will display a blank (in your case, a black sceen) since the image is no longer on the 'path'
To avoid this, create a folder and name it 'Wallpapers' put all the images there and you will save your self a lot of headaches. But remember if you move or delete the image, it will not show when you re-boot.

The most likely problem is you download a wallpaper, set is as background, then move the file somewhere else, or even delete it. While the image will still be set as your background, when you restart it will look for the file in the same location you told it to be set from. Most likely instance is, you download a wallpaper to your desktop, unzip the file, right click and set as desktop, then move the file to a different folder. If you put walls in a spot like, My documents/ My pictures/ wallpapers, and then from there tell it to set as background, and leave the file there, you should be fine.

I recommend saving all your background BMP files(wallpapers) to your windows directory. That is C:\windows. That way you can change them from display properties, as any backgrounds will show up it the desktop tab list.
You can easily change the wallpapers that way by just right clicking your desktop and choosing properties, to get to the wallpapers. By the way, this is the default location of all backgrounds for windows.

I recommend not listening to Chas, who likes simplicity in their life? Try putting them in C:\documents and settings\all users\shared documents\shared pictures\hey look at this\these pics are groovy\and you can use them\to make your background nice\downloads\bunches of files\man i need to get organized\wallpapers. Also you might take it one step further and make catagories in the wallpapers folder.

I save all of my walls in a folder called c:\backgrounds

That folder is organized with little folders inside so all of the walls that I have downloaded are in an organized fashion.

to be honest this time lol, I have a folder that I put things in and swear I'll organize it later, and it just keeps growning and growning, lol it's up to 3.66 gig now

, Horizon, I know your pain. I used to dumb all my downloaded/created stuff into my shareddocs folder. Until people started screaming that their pc slowed down when they open it. (It had over 100 .jpg's and over 50 .bmp's.
Now I have all the things in subfolders, so my shareddocs looks a bit like this:

Shareddocs
- Zips (3 mb)
- Design (2 gig)
- Projects ( 40 mb)

If I ever get organized it'll probably because the system crashed. It's easy to keep track of 0 files
