3,800 infections within 45 minutes of initial discovery.

I'll never understand, in this day and age, people that continue to click on unknown attachments.

I don't understand why they open them either. This one is a particularly bad one and the news item probably won't show up till 'morning, so I thought I'd give a heads up on what to look for....and hopefully to get some people not to open any attachments in their e-mail

W32.Novarg.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm. The worm will arrive as an attachment with a file extension of .bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif, .scr, or .zip. The worm also contains functionality to perform as a proxy server. It listens on all TCP ports in the range 3127-3198.

The worm will perform a DoS starting on February 1, 2004. On February 12, 2004 the worm has a trigger date to stop spreading.

Thanks! AdAware has also updated twice today. I read somewhere what they had sent out a warning and found a link that showed me how to run an in-depth scan. ( http://www.lavahelp.com/howto/fullscan/ ). Despite having ran AdAware earlier without finding anything, and downloading the second update and scanning a second time, on reconfiguring AdAware according to their instructions I did find three malicious files.

I had a tech guy out today to install a nex XP comp in the office downstairs. Would've done it myself of course, but hey.. H/O paid him to do it, so it left me free to do the other things I need to do to run my hostel.

In the time he was here, about an hour and a half... his mobile phone was ringing non-stop.
Every call was from idiots who had opened unknown email attachments, and infected their computers.

I could literally see the excitement on his face, and the dollar signs in his eyes

Although I am well protected, I have also created with VB a small email address book that sits in the system tray, in this I have imported the address book from OE and deleted all addresses from OE, now any Virus that may get thtough and looks into my OE address book finds nothing

I am protected by the following:-

AVG anti-virus
Outpost Firewall
Spybot (File Checking)
Adaware (File Checking)
EmailBook (My own address book)

I use The Amazing Stumpy Address Book for storing my email addresses as well. Nice little app and it's nice to not have OE addresses that viri can use.

Earlier today they discovered different variants of the 'mydoom' virus. These versions not only perform DOS attacks on SCO and Microsoft, but they also prevent any connection from an infected computer to any of the AV sites. Most AV proggies are making new DAT updates available now or will later tonight. This is the third DAT update for this virus in as many days, so do not assume you have the latest.

Most AV's and firewalls look for updates and download them if there are some.
