I have a dream, and that dream is to never make 9x style Icons again. How many people still use 9x or 2000. Time it takes to make sure a entire Iconpack looks good in 256 colors is becomeing more and more of a problem, and for less and less people. What do you think?

The way I figure it, xp style Icons will work on 9x as is, they jsut look all jaggy and have black mess all around them.

And if it is not time to dump 9x style Icons, when will it be? When Longhorn hits everything will be 128x128 Png's on Textured Quads. Do I have to wait untill 2006?

Thought. Anyone want to join me in a campain to wipe 256 color Icons form the face of the earth?

Paul, you make 'em, I'll use 'em. Orion are still the most used icons on my rig.

Do what you feel you need to do. If it is too big of a pain, I wouldn't. You'll have less and less people using 98, but you can count on win2k users for a long, long time.

That's immaterial, though. You're an artist, not a salesman, make what you like. Less time spent on stuff you don't wanna do is more time spent on the stuff you are interested in. If you are making nice XP icons exclusively, then you are giving people a reason to ditch the older formats.

As long as 9x and 2000 are supported people will not bother to upgrade, even though XP has proven to be be the most signifigant and worth while upgrade since 3.1.

The other problem is that many people purchased $300-$500 PC with win 9x and simply can't afford to use the full versions of SD apps or to upgrade their system or OS.

I would have no problem with you dropping the 9x Icons though. I use your older FauxS-X Icons on 200 anyhow...

The issue with upgrading to XP for me isn't one of XP's quality, it is win2k's quality. If the upgrade were free, or even cheap, I probably would, but I can't equate the cost of the upgrade with the modest benefit I would receive.

MS always says that their biggest competition is their last release, and it is true. I think they hold back a lot of innovation because they will need to wow people only 2 or 3 years in the future. That strategy is hurting them I think. More substantial upgrades every 5 years would be more to their benefit. They should have learned that with ME.

Xp is not a huge upgrade if you have 2000, but for 9x I cant imagan any reason, other then Hardware not to upgrade to XP.

Paul...the hardware issue/limitation still means I have more '98 boxes running here than XP ones.

I always think it a waste to consider trashing a P200 with 64 meg of EDO just because it won't handle XP....it runs 98 Se just fine...

Also laptops ...I think people have a tendency to hang on to them longer, not upgrade the internals and when the thing is DOA....Get a new one. I still see a lot of laptops with win9x on them

I say forget 98...it dosnt lend itself to skinning attractively anyway.XP is the current standard and at least it trys to look good.When those old pc's wont do anything but surf and check email...they will come along and join the present.

I would drop 9x and 2k icons seriously. There are still enough 9x icon packages to use if one looks arround a bit.

huh? i thought you considered yourself as at least semi-professional iconist. 256 colored icons is where the big bucks are made. do cellphones ring a bell?

I think Win2k supports true color icons but not transparency. So if I were you I'd drop the 256 colors icons, but if you have XP icons using transparency, I'd still make sure to include a version without the said transparency.  Also, there are some people using XP that disable transparency on their icons for performance reasons.
