Fences missing at system boot up incl. Restore backup problem

secondary problem with Icon switch on 2 of 3 displays

Hello,

I have 2 or 3 problems. But 2 problems maybe have the same reason.

And the 3rd problem is not so important because I have a workaround. But the workaround is not working because the main problem is with my workaround.

Now the problems I have:

When I start my PC with Windows 10 and Fences 5.81, I miss 3 fences on my 2nd display.

I have 3 displays and on the 2nd are 3 fences missing after every system start.

I must go in the settings to Layout and than Restore a backup. And then not every backup with the correct configuration is working.

I must try some backups to find one who is restore correctly. The problem comes with the last update. So at the same time When I start my PC and do a right click I have 2 “fences configuration” menue entries. I don’t know how its write in the english version because I use Fences in german. And in German the entry named “Fences konfigurieren” to open the settings. So when I do the first right click on the desktop, on the first position is the settings entry with the old logo with the blue F. And in the middle is the entry again with a smaller logo and a white F. Its possible to open the settings with both of them. After this first right click I have only the middle entry until the next pc start.

And the problem that the 3 fences are missing makes me angry because I must restore every start the backup.

And the next Problem is, that after restore the fences are not at the same dimension and positon after restore.

They are placed at the upper edge of the screen and the label is at the bottom of the fence. So I must unlock the fence and move them and change the wide and height. But in the backup they was saved correct.

And I must tell you that version 4 runs very better. I don’t have these problems with version 4.

Since I used version 5 the first problem was that after every system start up the Icons from display 2 and 3 was changed the display. So the Icons from display 2 was seen on display 3 and the icons from 3 was seen on 2. The position on the screen was the same. To example icon A was normally in the left upper corner from display 3, its was after starting the pc in the left upper corner of display 2. And all these icons wasn’t in fances. Because I found no solution I put all Icons from display 2 in fences and I must lock the fences. After doin this the problem was fixed with a workaround.

But now I have this stupid problem with this 3 fences on display 2 and with the buggy backups. If I do an manual backup from the correct size and position of all icons and positions, I can’t use this backup to restore. The icons from display 2 are not come back after restore although they are saved in it.

The Fences on display 1 are all ok. No problems.

I have no more ideas what I can do to fixed this problems.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. First do know that Fences 5.5 and above there is a new layout engine introduced that should manage your Fences layout better. From what I understand there is now v5.83 Beta out which you should try out since you have these layout issue. Please refer to this thread: https://forums.stardock.com/529942/  for more information on it. Please update to Fences 5.83 Beta first and report back if you still have issue.

Thank you.

Hi, to add on to this – this version "5.82 Revision 5" is the same as 5.83 but with extra debug information.

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.5-j132-Setup.exe

You can follow the instructions at https://forums.stardock.com/529991/page/1 to submit us a report, which will contain extended debug information. Be sure to reproduce the problem a few times / over at least a couple of cycles to be sure we can see the problem and we'll work to take a look. Thank you!

(Note, that this version is likely to resolve your issues too, and if so, we'd love to know that too.)

Hi,

Yesterday I have installed the beta and try it out. Now the fences are after the boot at the same position and the height and wide that I want.

The "problem" that the menue entry is twice when do the first right click on the desktop after boot is still there.

Now I try to move some icons out of the fences on display 2 to look if they move to display 3 and the icons from 3 move to 2.

When I have new results I give feedback again

I have the same problem.

Fresh Win11 installation, latest Fences 5 version installed and all icons are "falling" through the new created fence and the fence disapears after a reboot. My machine: Intel i7-12700K with Windows 11 Education 23H2.

Hi stonline, appreciate the effort to submit the report.

Seeing in your log our helper app fail to execute due to an error code "ERROR_ELEVATION_REQUIRED", which, my mistake, I think we solved with https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.6-j133-Setup.exe.

Please give that one a go and repeat the process? (Install, reboot, fiddle with it a bit, and then submit log.) Feel free to reboot during it to see if the changes stick – but it has solved this issue for others, so let's see what it does for you. If not, I'd very much like to dig in deeper.

Thank you!

Thanks, it seems to work now.

But there is the next problem.

Fences does every few minutes (indepentend if another Programm is running or not) open the Pop-Up-Window with the question "Fences want to change bla, bla, bla. Do you allow bla bla bla...".

It was much more worse before the last problem was solved. Now it's better but still happening.

Glad to hear!

Can you click the "Show more details" button that comes up, and send a screen capture? It should give more details about what it's trying to execute, which will help us get to the root of it. It should look something like this

Somehow on your machine, it was marked that "Fences.exe" requires administrator access to run.

Any idea how that setting may have gotten enabled?

Also, can you see if you get "Fences wants to change settings blah blah" prompt when you change screen resolutions? (One, or multiple, etc?) And if so, again hit that "Show more details" and screen capture? Thanks 🙏 There may be multiple different things getting run here. This will help understand what's going on, each with the "every few minutes" one you mention as well as "after a screen resolution change / monitor add/remove etc".

Ok, it seems to happen when the screen resolution will be changed. It also happens when starting Windows.

I don't know why Fences shall be started with Adminstrator rights. Where can I change this?

Great! Thank you for capturing this.

We’re testing out functionality that might be able to fix this automatically. It’s unclear how it got there on your machine, but hopefully this fixes it!

Stay tuned, and will update you on this thread in a day or so. 🙏

Hi,

now after a few days using the beta. Actually its works fine. No Icons switch the displays, the fences are not change the position or height/ wide.

So I thnk, its now ok and lets see whats the next version do.

Hi.

Still a disaster.

Not sure if you know Diablo4 from Blizzard.

But when you play there in Hardcore-Mode and you die during a monster fight because the main screen disapears and Fences pops up with the question "Fences want to change bla, bla, bla. Do you allow bla bla bla..." and you lost 100h of game play then this is not really funny.

:(

We do have a new build that attempts to resolve this (and very likely does). It turns off the system setting that somehow became enabled on that system that requires Fences.exe to be run as admin, thus causing every single launch to bring up this prompt.

Steps:

(1) Install update here (v5.84) https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.4.1-j135-Setup.exe

(2) Reboot

(3) Open Fences settings and accept the User Account Control prompt. You should get a message from Fences saying it has detected AppCompatFlags are enabled for the app and that they've been disabled for you. Log off and log on (or reboot) and the issue should be resolved.

Thanks for the update.

For the first look it seems to work.

By the way: your German translations inside Fences are  partially very funny.

Are you interested in a proper translation?

Regards,

S.

Sounds good. Please let us know if you see the issue come back and we'll continue to look deeper. That should though be the end of it. (You installed, after reboot pressed "yes" to one of the User Account Control prompts, rebooted again, and the prompts were gone thereafter. Correct?)

We find often that when this problem occurs, often the user has manually turned on this option as some sort of debug step. But it doesn't sound like you've done that here, so I'm wondering if some software on your system may have turned this on. Some sort of system optimization and/or antivirus software, etc etc. Any ideas? If something turned it on, I'm hoping it doesn't do so again.

And yes! We're overdue for a localization update. We have one coming up soon which will fill in the missing entries. We've open sourced the localizations, so would be happy to have you look once the new ones are in there. Thank you!
