Fences Backup Registry Batch File Exporter Not Working

Hi Stardock Support & Community,

I'm creating this forum post today regarding the registry batch file exporter not working.

I have followed Stardock's Tutorial in exporting the registry entries/files/keys, including where the batch file was provided, for user convienice. They also included a video, which I will link below. It demonstrates what's supposed to happen and what I have done. But, for me, everything is the same, except when I run the batch file, the registry entries/files/keys don't show up/appear in my documents folder.

For your information, I don't get any error message; everything in the command prompt dialogue is identical to the demonstration video, and it says it was successful, yet it wasn't.

I will provide the links to the tutorial and demonstration video below.

My Computer Specifications:
- Windows 11 Pro.
- Intel 13th Gen i5-13600K.
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Graphics Card.
- 32GB of DDR5 RAM.
(I've listed what I think is important; if I need to include any other computer component or include specifics like the model of RAM or GPU/etc, please let me know).

I'd appreciate some assistance regarding my problems.

Thanks.

Kind regards,
Lazarus.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Would it be possible that your security setting is blocking the script from doing its job?

Thank you.

Nope, it still doesn't work. I just disabled my anti-virus, and it still doesn't work. I also, as usual, allowed administrator permissions/capabilities to the batch file/script.

After you run the registry export batch file (its fine to 'overwrite' them if you get a message asking you to), open Windows Explorer and paste this line into the path:

%userprofile%\Documents

Example:

Hit 'Enter' on your keyboard.

If these files are there...

...the export worked...

Please then follow the rest of the directions in the help doc.

I tried this myself before contacting you, and I have tried it again now; it hasn't worked, and it's not there either/hasn't exported there either.

You are doing this on the PC that has Fences installed and configured as you want it, yes?  That is a must or there is nothing to export.

What exactly are you pasting into the Windows Explore path and what is the result when you hit Enter after pasting?

Yes, I 100% have Fences installed on the same PC I am trying to export from. The result says it has successfully exported, yet when I check my documents folder, it hasn't. The registry entries/keys are not there.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe

Fences HKCU was exported to: C:\Users\Lazarus PC\Documents\FencesHKCU.reg

Fences HKLM was exported to: C:\Users\Lazarus PC\Documents\FencesHKLM.reg

Press any key to continue . . .

Did you paste this line into your Windows Explorer address bar?  Dont just click to where you believe 'Documents' is, actually paste this path into the Windows Explorer address bar.

%userprofile%\Documents

The reason I ask is this place can be different if you use OneDrive.

If you run the batch file again, is it asking you if you want to overwrite the files it already created?

At the end of the day, you can export the registry keys manually yourself.

Where the registry keys are in the document:

This is an example of exporting 1 of them

I apologise for the late response. I was away.

  1. Yes, I have. I have gone to both directories. Following your suggestion, I will post an updated screenshot below. I also do not have OneDrive installed and have never used OneDrive before, and have uninstalled that crap using CTT's Windows Toolbox Utility (Chris Titus Tech) when I first installed Windows on my Computer/PC, lol.

  2. No, the batch file is not asking me to overwrite the files it has already created. It just says this;

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe

Fences HKCU was exported to: C:\Users\Lazarus PC\Documents\FencesHKCU.reg

Fences HKLM was exported to: C:\Users\Lazarus PC\Documents\FencesHKLM.reg

Press any key to continue . . .

  3. As you suggested, I will try exporting the registry entries/files/keys manually. I will update you on how it goes or if I encounter any problems.

  4. There are two registry entries/files/keys, not just one. Do I follow the same process to export them both, with your given tutorial/example, or do I need to use a different method to export each registry entry/file/key?

(When I press enter, the command prompt just closes itself).

Yes, same Export process, a different location is all.

Do I also export all of those other registry sub-entries/folders/files/keys, as well as the original registry entry/key path that was included in the tutorial? (In the screenshots attached below to this message).

And do I select the Export Range to 'All' or 'Selected Branch'?

You want everything under the Fences key for each location.

And for the Export Range? Do I select "All" or "Selected Branch"?
End of LazarusTorbica's quote

The default, 'selected branch' making certain you have selected the 'Fences' one.

Ah, yes, I didn't read it properly. My apologies. I will now attempt to export everything and reinstall Fences with the backup files I have gotten. I will update you on how it goes, if I am successful, or if I encounter any problems. Thank you.
